I think it is because they take their viewpoints far too seriously. Note that the Communists (or any ideology that people take way too seriously) were not exactly into "humor" either.
 
While I hate to generalize, I think that this is broadly correct. When I was chatting with Mr. Steve Austin and his merry band over at the BBC, almost every small joke by me or tfk would have to be explained after the fact. Yet, they would occasionally write posts just dripping with sarcasm. Weird.

I could explain to him what is going on, but I think it would be an interesting exercise to see if he is willing, and/or able, to figure it out himself.

The problem is, I copied the upright basket from the first panel to the last two, then decided to make it look like he had turned it over before we first looked in on him. Then I forgot to also turn it over in the third panel.
