Nick Griffin, BNP leader on BBC's Question Time

Please note that at no time am I suggesting (or intending to suggest) that migrants to the UK cause more crime or aren't needed. On the contrary, I think the UK needs migrants. My only concern is that we have a firm control over how many migrants we let into the country, so that our services can cope with them.

How have they been more dangerous than say, the Irish?

The Irish are just paying back for the way the Brits spread like a plague through Ireland :D

And,come to think of it, I am sure back around 850 you had the Authentic Anglo Saxons complaining how the Vikings were spreading like a plague through Britain.

But as Jack Straw says in QT, you would then have to have a firm control over how many babies are born.

We can't control that (nor should we), but we can, to an extent, control the number of migrants coming into the country. Just because we don't have a perfect solution, it doesn't mean we shouldn't do what we can.

Just out of interest, how do you feel about the Chinese laws on one child?

An extreme solution to a very big problem over there. I don't think it's right, nor would I want it over here, but I don't know enough about the policy and the results/criticism to give a proper response.

I work in the NHS and the migrants are the service. They also work in other areas of health care doing low paid jobs. They come here with qualifications and education not paid for by UK plc and fill vital roles.
They also do not, as a whole, seem keen to go for promotion. Don't know why this is.

And I think that role is a very valuable and necessary one. I've been seen by Nigerian doctors before, and had no complaints. But not all migrants work in the NHS.

Where lies the bigotry? Pointing out that most African and Middle eastern culture is in stark contrast to things like women's rights, gay rights, secularism and freedom of speech isn't bigotry.

The current "controls" are obviously not enough.

Most, if not all of Africa, the Middle East and large portions of Asia.

Leaving room for specialists with skills that we need, such as Doctors.

Every post you make belies your disgusting bigotry. Sad little person.

Sorry mate, Glasgow is the most violent place in Western Europe, let alone the UK, and is 94% white. Perhaps it's genetic? Or perhaps it is more likely to be the desperate poverty in that city.

There's kind of an irony then to the fact that Glasgow is the 2nd city in the UK for shopping after London. All those designer outlets in Princes Square and the Merchant City. (Mind you Sauchiehall and Argyle Street look decidedly tatty these days.) I guess we just like to look good when we're stabbing some poor sod.

I love Glasgow and the shopping but I would say Leeds has it beat for shopping IMO.

I couldn't find a decent sized sieve in Glasgow today. Shopping is rubbish in Glasgow!

I wonder why the population of China is perceived as being such a big problem. It certainly has a big population (1,323,324,000) but it is a big country (3,705,407 sq miles) giving a population density of 360 people per square mile.

Many other countries are far more densely populated including UK, Gemany and Italy in Western Europe and India, Japan, Taiwan and Bangladesh in Asia. So why is it China that is perceived as having the problem?

Where did i say that "multicullturalism" is evil? It's not evil, it is however monumentally stupid and naive.
The belief that different cultures, many of them haven't experienced an enlightenment or have any form of women's rights, can peacefully coexist isn't just extremely naive but also extremely dangerous.

Hell yeah!

Man, take for instance the fact that Butter Chicken curries are becoming so popular. Bloody Indian dishes are ruining British cuisine, like the humble pastry! It's as English as King Richard the Lionheart, for love of God!

The English language is being overrun with foreign words. For crying out loud, what ever happened to using good ol' British terms like 'pyjamas'? Where would we be without honest English terms like 'pork' and 'beef'?

England could do well without mixing with other cultures. I smile when I imagine what history would be like if England was pure and never mixed with any other culture.

Interestingly, the immigration debate continues to rage here in Australia, with boat people taking centre stage.

I'm amazed at the ignorance surrounding it, with few people really knowing the difference between an illegal immigrant, an asylum seeker and a refugee. The funniest thing is that one of the biggest groups who make up illegal aliens in Australia is the Poms and Yanks. :D Overstaying their bloody visas and working illegally to make a few bob while they backpack around the country.

Nothing is more amusing than telling a redneck xenophobe ('please explain'...ahem) this as they rant about illegals.

I don't understand why people are against the free movement of labour. I keep hearing that globalisation is a good thing and that free movement of capital is both beneficial, and impossible to prevent even if we wanted to.

Oh, that is right: if there is free movement of labour there won't be any point in "outsourcing" jobs to countries where the costs of production are cheaper because of low wages.

Fiona hits the nail on the head.
