The Truth of Christianity vs. All Other Belief Systems

Oddly, This Irenaeus dude thought the original story so nutty that he came up with his revision in about 190 A.D.

Didn't take long for people to start on the re-writes, eh?

Yeah, by "more recent" I didn't mean "yesterday." I meant my comment to show how malleable the "truth" can be.

Did you or your mom ever wonder why god put your mom in those relationships in the first place?

Probably for the same reason many of us have. The belief that a higher power is in charge, that in the end, if we're faithful, things will work out for the best, is a powerful urge. That in many cases, as Voltaire parodied, we delude ourselves declaring that we live in the best of all possible worlds, is no surprise to me at all.

In the meantime, we must tend the garden...

Prolly. I just finished reading Ehrman's book God's Problem. Not only quite readable but helps shed some insight on biblically-inspired thinking. It didn't reduce my astonishment at the thought processes but did yield some basis for understanding.

Why God put her in those relationships? He didn't have anything to do with it that I could tell.

Bad choices were made and your mother was in bad relationships and that's her fault, but she can't think for herself to get out of those relationships so God fixes it for her?

I'd say you're selling your mother short.

I honestly don't understand. God has no responsibility for her relationships yet faith in god helped her through them. But if god does not influence her life, how does faith in god help? Faith in god to do what? And if god does influence her life, then on what basis do you say he had nothing to do with her (then) present circumstances?

I would agree that the bible claims that god is loving and merciful. But virtually all the actions of god it describes are evil.

You just need to see the truth. We are all at enmity with God unless we have Jesus who reconciles us to God. Sin seperates us and Jesus shows us the way to be Gods friend again.
He wants to be our friend but you need to accept him on his terms, not the other way around. Understand?

So your god is a thug who demands that you be his friend, his way or he will break your legs. Your god is evil and petty.

Then why don't more people "know" this? Why is there so much confusion and disagreement? Why are you so special to know what's true? Why does it look like religion is man made? Why does it look like god is man made? Why would a god punish someone infinitely for a finite crime?

None of it makes any sense. If there was an omnipotent god you would think his plan of salvation would make sense.

We are his creation and he deserves our reverence. It would not hurt you one bit to have a healthy fear of God put in you!

That would explain it.

God is Holy and deserving of all our praise!! John3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Remember one day every knee will bow and every toungue confess Jesus is Lord.

Says who? How is it you know the mind of god?

It would not hurt you one bit to have a healthy fear of God put in you!
Why do you assert that it is healthy? Fear of god seems to lead to a lot of problems. I prefer people to do what's right because it's right. That's why I do what's right. Do you really need fear to be moral and ethical? Really?

These are words written by people, you know, humans. Faliable humans. Why should anyone believe the Bible?

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
A claim. Other religions have other claims.

That is an extremely stupid thing to say. If a man beats his son on a regular basis, he should still be revered by that son for fathering him? Most of your anecdotes (the man who lost a foot) show similar attitudes towards your concept of god.

See the thread on Nate Phelps for a healthy response to this type of situation.

I guess a lobotomy technically wouldn't hurt...

Pax, you interested?
