Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

Well it seems skeptics pretend nothing else happened outside of the "short matter of fact" accounts of the time of the discovery of Christ's empty tomb. Remember this is the greatest event in the history of the world. It is certainly reasonable to believe there was a lot more happening around the empty tomb than was reported in the short gospel accounts of this incident.

Or a lot less...

You got it backwards. Skeptics DON'T PRETEND to be able to know or claim stuff without solid evidence. Unlike you, skeptics don't like to make things up.

Skeptics tend to have standards.

Anytime you have 4 people describing an event (especially when 2 of the people are describing it second hand) there are usually going to be some appearances of discrepancies.

Sorry, Doc my bible knowledge is not up to date. Can you remind me. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which of them accompanied the women to the tomb and can give eyewitnesses accounts of the greatest event in the history of the world? Those that were not there. Who told them, and how do you know it was secondhand not third, fourth or overheard in a bar?

While you're at it, could you please tell us what exactly happened with a proper timeline of events and who was there, who saw what etc.

Assuming it actually happened, that is. Which is why we'd like some corroboration, which we don't have.

You mean the greatest event in the history of the world has no historical evidence for it's existence?

That's some great event.

Well, gosh-lee, then wouldn't you think the accounts would be clear, detailed and accurate?

So... People telling the "greatest event in the history of the world" are purposely leaving half the story out? How does it even make sense.

Are we any closer to knowing why the New Testament writers told the truth?
Yes, I think we are. So far the evidence Doc has provided has been fairly pathetic mainly consisting of musings on the motives of the gospel authors (while ignoring the obvious motive of wanting to spice up a story to get more believers) or assumptions that because trivial facts such as locations are correct the supernatural events must also be true.

The latest example provided by him where conflicting stories are rationalised to produce a novel and convoluted retelling of the story have led me to a realisation he is right in his title.

When the bible says I am the way, the truth and the life, he believes it. He thinks the truth is simply a synonym for the bible. If you read the thread title as Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers wrote the New Testament, it all makes perfect sense.

Please don’t make the mistake of confusing the truth as used by Doc with the normal meaning of the phrase or with the idea that the bible is anything more than a collection of made up stories

Sorta.
DOC just admitted that every one of the Gospel's account was incomplete by itself.
So we know that, even if they told the truth, they did not tell the whole truth.

Similarly, one can wonder what they also left out. Maybe when Jesus came to visit the apostles for dinner (Luke 24:26 to 31), they actually ate hallucinogenic mushrooms?

This is clearly correct based on everything I've read on this thread.

ETA: Nominated.
