Well said, Brainster. This should be a non-issue. Yet again and again it is brought up, and not just by the sexists here at the JREF, but by nationally-known commentators.
I will say, though, that it seems to be at least a little unequal in how much supporters of the two parties do it. I remember lots of slams about how ugly Chelsea Clinton and Amy Carter were, and how pretty Laura and the Bush twins are. There was also some bit going around the internet a few years ago with flattering pictures of Condoleeza Rice, Ann Coulter (Yes, she can be made to look good) Laura Bush, and a few other attractive female GOP members or supporters. Side by side with this were unflattering pictures of Janet Reno, Hillary Clinton, Helen Thomas, Molly Ivens, Joycelin Elders and a few other... um... past-their-prime Democratic women. Nyuk nyuk. I even got one piece of mail from one of my conservative relatives showing Hillary's head spliced onto the picture of a woman flashing her saggy breasts with a caption reading, "Hillary canvasses for votes".
I'm not seeing even the most leftist of left-wingers doing that kind of stuff. The worst I heard was calling Sarah Palin the VPILF, and I don't recall who said it first. It might have even come from a proud Republican.
You're right that this stuff should be out-of-bounds for political discussions, but people, being what they are, are bound to make jokes. When "serious" political commentators are making those jokes though, those commentators should lose credibility. And yes, I'm looking at you too, Al "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot" Franken.
Yes it goes on among conservatives, absolutely. I see supposedly conservative bloggers doing that "MILF" thing about Michelle Malkin. Really? They'd like to get her to cheat on her husband and run the risk of breaking up a family with two young children? How conservative is that?
