www.stopsylviabrowne.com hacked?

I'm not computer smart - the idea of someone doing this just makes me sick. Just wondering: Would it help for someone who is computer savvy among us to check to make sure no one steals any other Stop Sylvia Browne possible address/names in the meantime (stopsylvia.com, or whatever other options there might be), or those like StopFlimFlam, StopJohnEdward, that we know he was maintaining for his future sites?

The computer savvy are already on it :)

I don't think so. The dates for record creation and expiration are not in line with an expiration and renewal. It very much looks like a transfer.

I agree. The dates look a little weird.

I know krelnik said that people were looking into the situation, and I am sure they have everything in hand. Still, I thought I would share something that might be useful. DomainTools has historical whois data, and might let us know if the site was renewed in August. Membership is required to view any details, so I haven't checked. I haven't been able to find a free historical whois.

A good first step would - if your godaddy login details still give you access to the domain - be to change passwords for FTP etc: lock out whoever has done this. Will be quick to do, if the password you've got still works; sure someone here could do it, if you're struggling...

In the long run, this type of thing tends to boomerang on the scum sucking bottom dwellers who do it. Stressful in the short term, though :(

ETA: and I'm sure the computer savvy are already changing the passwords etc. on related domains...

I'm so glad computer savvy people are on this. How horrible! Like Susan and Robert don't have enough to worry about. Well, at least they've got competent help. Thanks to the savvy! :)

Hi, guys. In order to try to get Robert's username and password for those computer savvy people, I had to tell him what happened. I also had to tell him his computer crashed, because the information is apparently stored on it. However, I gave the computer savvy what he thought the info might be.

Good luck, Computer-savvy-geek-heros!

It would surprise me if you could just stroll up and take someone's domain name while they were ill.

Imagine if this happened to Microsoft (Which it nearly did but some honest person re-registered the domain for them).

The fact that Robert was incapacitated at the time and he's had media presence should bode well in reclaiming the domain.

....That's if it even lapsed in the first place.

There's no doubt in my mind that this is a transfer and not a grab of an expired domain.

If this is the case then it's actually good. It will make it easier to get the domain back. If it just expired then the domain is lost.

Damn, that sucks! Glad you other folks are on the ball though. I really hope it just didn't lapse during his recovery.

I have to agree with the idea that this is someone who doesn't want to badmouth all psychics. If you check the FAQ section it mentions the usual "I believe some people have a gift" woo statements.

Grr, wish I could do something.

From the insite links, our domain-jumper is some sort of psychic chat portal: LifePsychic.com.

Marketing Manager: Cathy Miller (see contact info bottom press release, dated Oct 19). :bwall

Yes, you can.

It did happen for the German google site!*

If it was stolen then there shouldn't be much of an issue.

A domain transfer has to be registered. Since that happens a lot and since it's benign most of the time the procedure provides the actual owner of the domain with an opt-out possibility. I.e. if someone claims that you gave your domain to them, you will be asked if that's true. Unless you complain the domain is then transferred.

However, your failure to complain doesn't suddenly mean you lose the rights to your domain, and you can get it back relatively easy.

* I am quite certain that I am not misremembering this. Someone just initiated the transfer and for a few hours or a day or so the domain google.de was pointing at some private website. I don't think they ever revealed the agreement that was reached between google and whoever took the domain.

The site was not hacked. The content was not lost.

There are people looking into this in California.

Everyone calm down, it should be fixed in a couple of days, though we may need to start using a different URL for the site.

So skeptical webmasters and bloggers: get ready to fix your links.

Krelnik... and other computer geniuses....

If there is a change of domain name, is there anyway you can put me to be first on the list to know? I have several orders in for merchandise, and I used the existing web address. I'd hate to send those out if that address is going to be invalid now.

I'll start contacting buyers about this, to see if they want to wait a little longer, so we can be sure the merchandise has the correct address on it.

How about HaltSylviaBrowne.com or StopSylviaBrowne.net ? (.org is taken)

ETA: Or a name that involves her son Chris aswell? StopSylviaAndChrisBrowne.com ?

I don't want to muddy the water but does THIS cached website mean anything to anyone who understands this stuff?

ETA: And how safe is StopKaz.com?

I checked StopKaz and it's fine till .... i can't remember when, but at least 2009.

Oh man,

This has seriously pissed me off.

Good luck people in rectifying the situation.

Cue.

I don't know what it should be... I just need to know what it is, when that decision is made. Hopefully it won't change at all.

I say if possible we should stay as close to the original as possible (StopSylviaBrowne.net, for example). Sylvia's son uses a different last name so it would have to be StopSylviaBrowne and ChrisDufresne - kind of lengthy but could work. If all else fails, he could also put the Stop Sylvia Browne info under an umbrella site like StopPsychicFraud or StopFlimFlam (if those are still available) since he'd already had plans to create a site like that. But I'm guessing ideally he'd like to keep his Stop sites (Stop Kaz, Stop Sylvia, etc).
