McCain can't send an email? Doesn't know how to use a computer? Maybe he's an old fuddy-duddy technophobe deserving of our scorn? Or maybe there's another reason? From a 2000 profile, long before Obama's nasty ad:

McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes.

Even presented with this information, the dolts at the Obama campaign refused to back down:

Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer denied that the freshman Illinois senator's ad was making an issue of McCain's age. "It's extraordinary," he said, "that someone who wants to be our president and commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail."

I love the comments over there; maybe he can't use the keyboard, but couldn't he just push a button on a mouse? Or couldn't he just get a dictation program to handle the actual typing chores? (Or couldn't he have staffers who handle the email for him?)

Because it is so, so important that the president send and receive email. After all, Bill Clinton sent two whole emails in his presidency, no doubt averting disaster for the US by so doing.

ETA: This Forbes article from 2000, shows McCain was getting and responding to email back then:

You're kidding right? If anything it is a lot easier to type on a full sized keyboard than on a Blackberry. And umm, just as an aside, do the Blackberries you have used not do email?

Have the Viet Cong break your fingers for 5 years. Then hand type the first three chapters of the the book of your choice into wordpad (simulating either a really long message or multiple smaller ones). Then fire off a dozen 5-line messages on a blackberry, then tell me the two are alike.

Or how about have the Viet Cong break your fingers for 5 years. then try to fire off a dozen 5-line messages on a blackberrywith keys that are so small your 72 year old eyes can barely make out whats written on them. Oh, he can do that?

And that is some strawman you stuffed there. Emails in a lot of the worlds homes and offices are much more commonly the 5 line message than three chapters. Being able to "fire off a dozen 5 - line messages" would make him more than equal to the typing of many members of this forum. Do you suppose we have any members here that cant email?

You know McCain is a former navy combat pilot, don't you? His eyesight is probably better than most 20 year olds.

Why don't you get a note from McCains doctor that it's ok for him to use computer keyboards? The fact remains that they are his hands and he has to live with them.

Wow, I had no idea that a pilots eyesight dont deteriorate with age like everyone elses. Amazing. Most 20 year olds you say? Was it cybernetic implants or the Universal Soldier program that gave him these upgrades?

I dont need a note from his doctor as I can see the pictures of him using an itsy bitsy little Blackberry keyboard and read the quotes by his own staff (that are with him more than his doctor) about how he does it quite often.

I don't have medical studies on hand to quote from, but in Chuck Yeagers autobiography he described having eyesight as good at seventy as it was at seventeen. General Yeager completed his last flight in an F-15 Eagle at the age of 79. Eyesight is one of the most critical physical requirments for combat pilots.

I don't know how to put it simpler than that. To say conclusively that McCains use of a cell phone means he can use a desktop PC just fine would require a knowledge of McCains injuries and overall condition that I do not believe you have.

IMO, the general voting populace is dumb. Yes, D U M B, dumb. I expect a bit higher level dialog here. Clearly, my expectations are foolish.

Additionally, you also don't know exactly how McCain is using his blackberry. If all he can do is a dozen keypresses before the pain becomes too much, then he can still speed dial or retrieve a specific file or message (like speeches, economic reports, senate minutes, intelligence reports, et cetera...). And he can still recieve messages sent to him by his staff, family, whomever. He doesn't need to have full use of his hands to find such devices useful.

Now Obama on the other hand, that foot in his mouth is truly crippling.
