Keep in mind, it was a fair question early in his campaign, if you consider a candidate's religion to be a fair issue. Obama does have Muslim family. But it's an issue that has been - or at least should have been - settled a long time ago.
 
Obama identifies with the Muslim faith and sees himself as a Muslim. It is an identity thing with Obama, he not being particularly religious, one way or the other.

Of course his father’s family were Muslim.

His stepfather was Muslim and he studied the faith in Indonesia.

When he was in college he did not hang with the Blacks, but with Pakistanis who are Muslims.

I have a question... what if he were a Muslim? How would that make him a bad choice for President?

Abdus Salam was a devout Muslim, for example, and he was a pretty smart guy.

Well it might be good in the sense he could force a settlement upon the Israelis in the Middle East. If we dumped Israel and adopt Gaza as a dependent state and help with the building of the Gaza Strip infrastructure then the war with AQ could come to an end.

I was thinking that myself. I hope he becomes a muslim after taking up office now.

He's not a Muslim now, he is a Christian, but he did attend a Muslim school.

Personally, I don't care what his religion is. One crazy religions God is just as bad as another crazy religions God.

(But note these issues do note imply painting with a broad brush large groups of moderates)

Surely NO ONE on this forum would so overtly BIGGOTED to claim that one can't be a devout Muslim and a good American citizen, or to claim that all Muslims are terrorists. Sure everyone here can recognize that evil men and women of all faiths and no faith can be trotted out, but that does not mean that ALL members of that faith are evil.

So for purposes of this forum, whether or not Obama is a Muslim should be a non-issue.

As long as a candidate does not intend to push his or her personal beliefs on the rest of us in the form of policy (as McCain/Palin want to do in overturning abortion rights or cutting funding for stem cell research), it's not relevant.

There can be no religious test for office in this country.

Well, either you think that someones religion is going to be in the way of their doing the job, or isn't.

Would you afford the same courtesy to a Christian, if you felt he was a pretty smart guy? If so, then great. I'm with ya. I don't care alot because I know that many politicians just pay lip service to religion topics to make certain types happy. I'm not too concerend about one trying to enforce his views onto us. Despite hysteria of it happening.
