Sarah Palin!

More to the Monegan story - the Wooten brother-in-law character is a frickin creep, no. 1. He threatened to kill Palin's father and tased his 11-year-old stepson. That got him a suspension from his trooper's job of 10 whole days, whittled down to 5 by the union.

No. 2, Palin has been bending over backwards to help the investigation. She suspended the guy who made the phone call. With the kind of powerful enemies she's been making in Alaska (to popular acclaim), I wouldn't be surprised to find out this was a setup.

No. 3, she had valid reasons to fire Monegan and full authority to do so. There's no evidence that she even knew about the Wooten phone call when she fired Monegan. And did Monegan say a single thing about it until he got the ax?

I don't think this dog will hunt.

it will if the independent investigation finds her guilty and does so before the election.....

though given the elevation of the political stakes, whether either of these things are likely or even possible remains to be seen. :)

The appearance to me is that his primary criterion was a non-Senator with a vagina and that was the starting point. I don't know that much about Palin, but I do wonder how many others were listed above her that declined to be considered. And I think the choice hampers his credibility in knocking Barack's experience, since McCain's age and health issues are more than theoretical.

Perhaps it's just a regional language thing, or maybe I'm just wrong, but I don't think I've ever heard of a male being called "perky".

The guy tased his stepson? How is that bad?

ETA: Truth in packaging: the closest I have is a step-nephew-in-law, so I am really not any kind of authority on tasing stepchildren as such. And I wouldn't consider tasing my step-nephew-in-law, because he seems a good kid and is earning his own way. Please do not consider this posting an endorsement of tasing stepchildren. Bro.

That's a "scandal?" In Washington politics that isn't even worthy of mention in the USA Today's around the nation page.

Biden still trumps that with his plagarisism, hair plugs, and inability to distinguish a battalion from a regiment.

Reading someone else's speech isn't (as far as I know) illegal, and even if it is it would be less illegal than settling a domestic dispute by having someone sacked (allegedly).

Though given the tremendous abuses of power perpetrated by the neocon cabal, I'm sure she will fit right in in Washington. :)

The more anyone on the left tries to tell me this is a bad pick, the more I know it to be the opposite. I mean, you guys don't actually expect us to believe you have our best interest at hearts, DO YOU?

If you really thought this was a terrible pick, you'd be happy, and saying next to nothing about it, except maybe snide remarks like "great move McCain <snicker>" implying how you are now going to steamroll over him.

This election was the Democrats to win or lose, for quite some time now. Too bad you guys have done such a bad job we are now at the point where it is at least a legitimate question as to whether McCain can win. Just a year ago this thing was all sewn up for you guys.. or so it was said.

I wonder if sales of antacid products will be on the rise for left wingers in the next two months.

The Obama campaign laughs at her experience:

Barack Obama's campaign is blasting John McCain for putting "the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency."

That's foolish, really foolish. Obama's foreign policy experience? And if elected he won't be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

It's fine for the talking heads to say that it neutralizes the argument. But the Obama campaign should have kept out of it.

Obama's political experience:

8 yrs state legislator in Illinois, population 12.8 million, representing part of Chicago, population 2.8 million.
3 years 8 months US senator

Palin's political experience:

4 years Wasilla city council. I use "city" loosely: the population in 2000 was 5,470
6 years Wasilla mayor
1 year 9 months Governor of Alaska, population 670,000. Alaska is also a special case: they have such a low population and so much oil money that they have low taxes and send checks to their citizens. Not much help trying to balance a federal budget half a trillion in deficit. How is this going to go over with the Republican base:

Over the opposition of oil companies, Republican Gov. Sarah Palin and Alaska's Legislature last year approved a major increase in taxes on the oil industry — a step that has generated stunning new wealth for the state as oil prices soared.

Even if you wish to call this a wash, it still negates any claim by McCain that Obama does not have the necessary experience to be president. Neither he nor Obama have elected executive experience, and he is at least as qualified as Palin.

One of the biggest Truthers at DU is currently jumping on board with the Incredibly Base Rumor/Falsehood that Palin's fourth child is actually the child of her oldest daughter. I'm irate as blue blazes. It's manifestly not true and it sickens me to watch some people jump on board that train to Crazytown.

I would have been happier if McCain would have picked Giuliani, but I still think Palin hurts McCain. How many Hillary supporters are going to vote for McCain/Palin, considering she's pro-life and a creationist? The only thing this does is make history and prevent Biden from being mean to her. Not that Biden is hurt by this. He doesn't have to say a single word to her or about her to win a debate.

Yeah, but is the child being raised Muslim?
