Serious problems with the 9-11 Debunking waste of time

"Conspiracy theorists have an answer to that, too. They assert that Benjamin Chertoff, a researcher on the project, is a cousin of homeland security chief Michael Chertoff. He's not, though he may be distantly related. "

"He's not , though he may be..."? Well that's some denial and a hell of a coincidence if it's true. But then again there's a lot of coincidence to but into if you want to support the fairy tale.
Wait just a cotton-picking minute here. Did I read this part right? They plainly state they're not cousins but might be distantly related, yet somehow you read this as meaning something else? Try reading that again, this time attempting to actually understand the words there. And why would that be any kind of meaningful coincidence?

You're putting on a very poor show here!

Yeah this is what I said people like you do. Thanks for confirming.
Stupid non-crazy people. Bunch of jerks is what you are.
colbert.gif

So why do debunkers bring him up? And who are the crush of demolition experts who disagree? While you're at it what the heck is a crush of experts?
when has a debunker ever brought him up? you mentioned him in your OP, so in this thread YOU brought him up

Yeah this is what I said people like you do. Thanks for confirming.

So what do I and people like me do? If you meant mentioning that Jowenko only watched videos, we do that. If you meant the reference to fire fighter testimonies and lack of any signs of demolition, we do that too. Did you mean my conversations with Daniel Nigro? I did that too. Or perhaps the links, we often refer to those links, because they are excellent links.

What did I do wrong here?

5. The book by Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton chairs of the 9/11 committee where they reveal NORAD and the FAA lied and how they felt they were setup to fail by the administration and were under funded. The same administration that never wanted an investigation in the first place.

False, misleading and false, respectively.

Kean and Hamilton do not say that NORAD and the FAA lied. They do say that the commission was initially given false information, but add that they do not know whether the inaccuracy was intentional or accidental. (It’s also worth bearing in mind that the commission found the information to be false; as a result, the truth was determined and incorporated into the report).

Hamilton said:
They gave us inaccurate information. We asked for a lot of material and a lot of documentation. They did not supply it all. They gave us a few things. We sent some staff into their headquarters. We identified a lot more documents and tapes, they eventually gave them to us, we had to issue a subpoena to get them.

Eventually they told us we had the story right, they had it wrong, it took a while to get to that point, but we eventually got here. Did they lie to us or was it inadvertent? We are not a law enforcement agency, we did not have that kind of authority, going back to the mandate again. All of us had our suspicions here, but we simply did not have the staff and we were right up against the deadline when this came out, that we didn’t have the time to say that these officials had willfully and intentionally lied.

While they indeed had sincere reservations about how it was formed, funded and so forth, neither Hamilton nor Keane believe that the 9/11 Commission was ultimately unsuccessful. In fact, the opposite is true. The following is a quotation from their book Without Precedent:

Hamilton and Keane said:
Both of us were aware of grumbling around Washington that the 9/11 Commission was doomed--if not designed--to fail: the commission would splinter down partisan lines; lose its credibility by leaking classified information; be denied the necessary access to do its job; or alienate the 9/11 families who had fought on behalf of its creation. What we could not have anticipated were the remarkable people and circumstances that would coalesce within and around the 9/11 Commission over the coming twenty months to enable our success.

In short, whether or not they believe that the Commission was "set up to fail," they don't believe that it actually did fail.

The notion that the “administration… never wanted an investigation in the first place” is simply wrong. Sorry.

3. Saying no explosive experts support CD but then pointing to Jowenko who still claims WTC7 was a CD.
In Jowenko's explanations of the collapse of the towers, he goes into great detail how they collapsed. He explains the "squibs," ejection of material, concrete pulverizations, etc. On WTC 7, he is very vague. He speculates how many people it would take to wire the building up and whenever it is mentioned that they building was on fire, he pauses and looks confused. In the longer version of the interview, he talks about reading in a "journal" that 7 was demolished. He misquotes Silverstein as saying "pull it down," which shows that there was a mistranslation. This also puts his ability to speak and understand English in doubt. This would make the so-called phone conversation questionable at best. Either way, Jowenko's opinion on WTC 7 is based on very little information which makes it not all that credible.

5. The book by Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton chairs of the 9/11 committee where they reveal NORAD and the FAA lied and how they felt they were setup to fail by the administration and were under funded. The same administration that never wanted an investigation in the first place.
Yet Lee Hamilton states that the commission was a reasonable success. Funny how that's ignored.

Nope not on the FBI's most wanted for 9/11. No evidence.

Because he's not on the most wanted list means there is no evidence...?
That's called a non-sequitur.

9/11: Absurd claims that jet fuel fires melted the WTC steel

Ah, strawman it is...

Yeah this is what I claimed you do.

No comment then? Why is Jowenko wrong on the Towers, but right on WTC7? Do you have anything?

Meigs is a publicist and the PM piece is nothing but propaganda.

If your definition of propaganda is a collection of highly credentialed people discussing 9/11 within their respective fields of expertise, then I guess you're right. Does it bother you that experts in relevant fields think 9/11 conspiracies are for the birds?

You won't believe what the conspiracy theorists are claiming-or will you?

"Conspiracy theorists have an answer to that, too. They assert that Benjamin Chertoff, a researcher on the project, is a cousin of homeland security chief Michael Chertoff. He's not, though he may be distantly related. "

"He's not , though he may be..."? Well that's some denial and a hell of a coincidence if it's true. But then again there's a lot of coincidence to but into if you want to support the fairy tale.

I asked for evidence, not a source for this silly claim.

Even if true?
"We to this day don't know why NORAD [the North American Aerospace Command] told us what they told us," said Thomas H. Kean, the former New Jersey Republican governor who led the commission. "It was just so far from the truth. . . . It's one of those loose ends that never got tied."

Like I said, CYA. People were pointing fingers at one another. Hardly evidence of a conspiracy, quite the opposite. If it were a conspiracy, the loose ends would've been sorted out ahead of time.

I'm doing fine thank you. How about his words?

"All of these have been submitted to NIST, but never acknowledged or answered. I will list some of these.

1. Why is not the design process of assigning fire protection to the WTC towers fully called out for fault? ...

2. Why were not alternative collapse hypotheses investigated and discussed as NIST had stated repeatedly that they would do? ...

3. Spoliation of a fire scene is a basis for destroying a legal case in an investigation. Most of the steel was discarded, although the key elements of the core steel were demographically labeled. A careful reading of the NIST report shows that they have no evidence that the temperatures they predict as necessary for failure are corroborated by findings of the little steel debris they have. Why hasn't NIST declared that this spoliation of the steel was a gross error?

4. NIST used computer models that they said have never been used in such an application before and are the state of the art. For this they should be commended for their skill. But the validation of these modeling results is in question. Others have computed aspects with different conclusions on the cause mechanism of the collapse. Moreover, it is common in fire investigation to compute a time-line and compare it to known events. NIST has not done that.

5. Testing by NIST has been inconclusive. Although they have done fire tests of the scale of several work stations, a replicate test of at least & [sic] of a WTC floor would have been of considerable value. Why was this not done? ...

6. The critical collapse of WTC 7 is relegated to a secondary role, as its findings will not be complete for yet another year. It was clear at the last NIST Advisory Panel meeting in September [2005] that this date may not be realistic, as NIST has not demonstrated progress here. Why has NIST dragged on this important investigation?"

Ah, as I thought. Nothing that supports conspiracy theorists. It's a very technical study, so it's pretty much a given that not every NIST contributor will be in complete agreement with every aspect of the investigation. That you think this is suspicious is sort of baffling.

I think I've just had an epiphany, so to speak. Before today, I had not realized the true breadth of confirmation bias necessary to subscribe passionately to a 9/11 conspiracy theory.

Truther: Michael Chertoff is Ben Chertoff's nephew! (or some varient thereof)
Normal Person: No, this statement is in error. Here is the proof...
Truther: Ah-hah! So, because they share the same last name, they might be related, and that means that I might have been right.
Normal Person: But, you, in this instance, are very clearly wrong.
Truther: But I might have been right, and therefore, the logical fallacy that I was operating under is also possibly valid. Therefore, 9/11 was an inside job.

LC, any rational adult would have simply conceded the point and moved on to other topics. Why do you insist on following a fallacial line of reasoning whose basis is an erroneous claim that you've copied from other websites?

WRT last names:

My mother's maiden name was extremely uncommon; so much so that her family was the only one with that name in the entire state of Washington. It's a fair bet that anyone with that name, anywhere in the world, is probably related to me on some level.

That said, if I saw that my fourth or fifth cousin was trying to cover up the murders of 3,000 people, would I stand by and let it happen? Hell no. That SOB would be on his own. I'd rat him out in a minute, and I expect most here would do the same.

So why do debunkers bring him up? And who are the crush of demolition experts who disagree? While you're at it what the heck is a crush of experts?

Are you nuts? That's why WE bring him up? It's YOUR MOVEMENT who brings him up. What kind of answer is that to my question? YOU brought him up in your '7 points'; obviously you think there's some kind of significance in it.

And a 'crush' in this case means a crapload. You know, all the demolitions experts who don't think the WTC was CD. And don't reply with "what experts?"--I won't do your research for you. If you were serious about the 'truth' you would know what the world's CD experts have to say in the matter and which ones agree with CD, which ones don't, and which ones have not said anything.

You are an unbiased seeker of truth, right?

Sitting at my work computer on a Friday afternoon, reading this thread, I thought of a quote on my bulletin board. It sometimes helps me carry on when I feel as though I will never finish (whatever), no one will ever understand (whatever), I am doomed to be a voice crying in the wilderness about (whatever). Debunkers or Trutherians can both use it.

It comes from the ancient Hebrew "Sayings of the Fathers" (Pirke Avot 2:21): "It is not for you to complete the task, but neither are you free to desist from it."

To me that's kind of optimistic. Others may disagree.

I've put together some facts here; let's hear about some other red flags that should pop up to anyone claiming to be a critical thinker while suspending all disbelief to buy into the government fairytale.

Some that I can think of off the top of my head:

1. Blaming UBL for the attacks even after the FBI states there is no hard evidence connecting him to 9/11.

Being literally true doesn't mean being true in spirit. You are correct in the literal sense of "hard evidence". But you're wrong in the picture painted that they don't have any. What they do have is circumstantial evidence. Things like the videos of him admitting to the crime may not be admissible since the chain of custody cannot be clearly established, but it's ridiculous to ignore those video's information entirely.

The way you phrase the charge, it's as if the FBI doesn't consider him a suspect, so why does anyone else? You're painting a false picture; they most obviously do believe he's involved.

2. Crying jet fuel, jet fuel, jet fuel, for years before the NIST report only to find that NIST blames the building content fire but never really backs it up.

That's a misstatement of what the realists have been saying all along. The jet fuel burnt out very quickly, and the building contents were the items aflame during most of the event. This has led to some conspiracy fantasists arguing from incredulity that the contents can lead to such a hot fire, but from the beginning, no one's singled out jet fuel as being the sole combustible involved.

No one but the truthers, that is. Again, re: "Jet fuel and steel melting" myth.

On top of that, the first people crying "jet fuel" were the truthers saying it doesn't burn hot enough to melt steel. Don't pin that argument on the believers in reality; it's the conspiracy fantasists who brought it up first.

And, "never really backs it up": What specifically do you mean? Are you referring to the debate about whether the fire contents can get hot enough to lead to such structural failures? You should debate that with NYCEMT86, one of the posters here. He did a thread on basic fire behavior here:

http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87587

Or do you mean something else?

3. Saying no explosive experts support CD but then pointing to Jowenko who still claims WTC7 was a CD.

And who also claims that WTC 1 & 2 were not. And who also admits to not having done anything more than view videos and blueprints.

And who's opinion also flies in the face of not just one industry opinion (building demolitions), but three (add structural engineering and fire and structural safety engineering). To start searching for examples of this, begin with the links at the bottom of this page:

http://www.debunking911.com/links.htm

On top of all that, what keeps bothering us about the conspiracy fantasist argument is that they'll all the time claim demolitions use for towers 1 & 2, but they'll point to Jowenko as a professional source, in spite of the fact that he directly says he doesn't believe those towers were brought down by demolitions. It's the fact that you all keep citing him as an expert supporting your contentions, but refuse to admit that he actively denies it where the main towers are concerned.

4. Championing the PM hit piece as debunking all 9/11conspiracy theories when in reality they only cherry pick certain parts of one movie out of the entire 9/11 movement. Then finding out the piece was written by Benjamin Chertoff nephew of Michael Chertoff and Jim Meigs a former magazine editor of Premiere Magazine and Entertainment weekly.

They are not the only sources. Ignoring the ridiculous familial relationship charge - as if that somehow falsifies the argument - the writers did not create the information in the PopMech article and book out of thin air. They leaned on many, many professional sources for their work. You cannot attack the PopMech literature by simply attacking them, you must prove that everyone listed here:

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/military_law/1227842.html?page=9

... is either not credible or actually wrong. Chertoff and Meigs merely assembled the information; the experts linked above actually originated it. Attacking Chertoff and Meigs is like attacking Herbert Morrison ("Oh the humanity!") for the Hindenburg disaster. Morrison is not responsible for anything more than reporting that tragedy. Chertoff and Meigs is not responsible for anything more than assembling the information from the above linked experts into something readable by the general public.

And: Cherry picked? More like 'highlighted the central claims' to debunk. Funny you should accuse them of this when one of those "cherry picked" topics is at the center of your 2nd and 3rd points.

5. The book by Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton chairs of the 9/11 committee where they reveal NORAD and the FAA lied and how they felt they were setup to fail by the administration and were under funded. The same administration that never wanted an investigation in the first place.

Regarding NORAD: They were caught in a falsification - a lie, or a mistake, I'm not sure which - about timeline details. It was a very specific misrepresentation (or mistake) on a single issue, not a general lie about everything they were involved in on 9/11/01. That is a very serious issue; NORAD's leadership failed in that regard, and deserved reprimand. Uniformed officers should not play loose with information like that. BUT, that's far from suggesting a conspiracy. In fact, the truth is far from your own picure of it, saying that "NORAD... lied". The way you phrase it, they lied about everything they were involved in. That's a misrepresentation.

I'll leave further comment to others here. Knowledge of specific details about the 9/11 Commission's report are not my strong suit.

6: After claiming the NIST investigation and their theory of collapse initiation is the be all end all evidence to put all CT theories to rest even though NIST never touches on the collapse itself a former NIST insider comes out with a list of problems he has found with the way NIST had conducted their investigation into the WTC tower collapses and also notes the report on building seven is still not released.

Logical fallacy: Inflation of conflict

Unless there's another "insider" whom I'm not familar with, this is a reference to Dr. Quintiere's comments, summarized here.

To make a long story short, he does have serious and valid charges regarding the NIST investigation. And he does indeed call for an independent peer review (not a brand new investigation from the beginning, as some claim). But:
  1. His criticisms are very clear and specific and pertain to NIST procedures and some of their conclusions. Here's one example:

"I suggest that there’s an equally justifiable theory and that’s the trusses fail as they are heated by the fire with the insulation intact. These are two different conclusions and the accountability for each is dramatically different..."
    Here's another:

"Why is not the design process of assigning fire protection to the WTC towers fully called out for fault? The insulation thickness of the truss members varied from 0.5 inches at its construction, changed to a specification of 1.5 inches in 1995, and was taken on its face as 2.5 inches for the North tower fire floors based on a PA report. This extraordinary range of thicknesses bears an in depth investigation. Why were no hearings held or witness testimonies heard on this critical design process?"
    Here's a third:

"Why were not alternative collapse hypotheses investigated and discussed as NIST had stated repeatedly that they would do? Their current explanation for the collapse of the towers is critically based on an assumption that the insulation was removed from the steel in the path of the aircraft, particularly the core columns. NIST does not show calculations or experiments to satisfactorily confirm that the insulation was removed in the core. As some large aircraft components went directly through the buildings, and NIST indicates the others were splintered on impact, can they explain why these small splinters could still denude the steel?"
Note what he considers is an example of an "alternative collapse hypothesis". And take note of that throughout his commentary at that link above. None of his criticisms open the door to such alternate explanations as "controlled demolition". All of them are very specific to the actual NIST findings, none of them suggest any conspiracy on the level that the fantasists charge.
  2. He very clearly states that he does not believe explosive demolitions were involved:

Although Dr. Quintiere was strongly critical of NIST’s conclusions and its investigatory process, he made it clear he was not a supporter of theories that the Twin Towers were brought down by pre-planted explosives. “If you go to World Trade Center One, nine minutes before its collapse, there was a line of smoke that puffed out. This is one of the basis of the ‘conspiracy theories’ that says the smoke puffing out all around the building is due to somebody setting off an explosive charge. Well, I think, more likely, it’s one of the floors falling down.”
Dr. Frank Greening (Apollo20 here in this forum) is also very strongly critical of the NIST investigation, but his criticisms, too, are based on rational thought, not conspiracy fantasy.
7. To this day not one person or agency has been held accountable for the failure to protect the US from the attacks of 9/11.

I agree with you there, and that angers me too. But not to the point to where I'm accepting fallacious arguments in order to stoke my anger. I'd rather that the intelligence agencies are streamlined with the law enforcement agencies to better share information. I'd rather that the government be less 'kit gloved' about killing - yes, killing - known terrorists who carry out operations to kill others. I'd rather that the airport security firms in the US be better trained in order to stop such terrorists from boarding, and that airlines have at least several security or law enforcement staffers on every flight in order to stop hijackings. But I'm not going to accept unsupported and, frankly, ignorant claims that demolitions were used or that the government actively made 9/11 happen. Anger shouldn't be the gateway emotion for credulity or scientific and engineering ignorance.

"Oxford Brookes University"?

Read the Pop Mech book. It explains that B.Chertoff's mother was just being vaguely accommodating to a telephone call. Bollyn -- on the run, isn't he? an extreme right-wing anti-semite, not to be trusted with anything referring to anyone marginally Jewish -- Bollyn lied. He misquoted and lied. (And "related"... means very, very little.)

But you don't give a damn, do you? Any misstatement is ok in your book. Outright lies, everything.

By the way, "ill attestation"? Have you been taking lessons at the Mjd school of Bad Overstuffed English?

You said nephew, which is it? BTW, you still are getting the entire story wrong. And they may not be cousins at all. This is sad when you think this means something pertaining to 9/11?

And your journalist is not a real good source. He never backed up the phone call with a trip to the records office to prove his BS junk. Which makes no difference but thanks for a small part of the real story, which means nothing for 9/11.
Do you have a source to confirm this, and the evidence to support what this means? Better yet what exactly does this mean?

PopMech said:
Ben Chertoff ran PM's research and fact-checking department at the time of the original magazine article, and conducted some reporting for the story. He was not the "senior editor," "head writer," or any of the other incorrect titles lofted by theorists.

. . .

Moreover, Michael Chertoff was not secretary of Homeland Security at the time PM researched the original story. He was sworn in on Feb. 15, 2005, more than a month after the piece went to the printers.

what would it mean anyway?

So I guess you can point me to the retraction?
Which is it, cousin or nephew, and please show me the family tree you must have to support anything?

Also, what does this mean? What is the big deal and how does it play for 9/11? Are you wrong, again?
