Pear Cable CEO Calls James Randi's $1 Million Offer a Hoax

Look, the proof is in the results, Paul. He says he's got advisors, fine. But he either needs to consult his advisors more and sooner, or he needs better ones. That much is evident.

I consider it a failure on Mr. Randi's part that there was not. I think Mr. Fremer, despite his bombast (a trait he shares with Mr. Randi), was at least for a time willing to move forward. Remember, Mr. Fremer did not withdraw anything from the table: it was Pear Cable who withdrew their cables, and Mr. Randi that withdrew the Transparent and Tara Labs options.

It sounds like there are other applicants lined up now. Let's hope JREF can avoid the pratfalls and get it done!

You know the so-called bottom line of all this is that the cable stuff that they claim for their produce is snake-oil, woo-woo, BS. And no matter how the test was done, and after they failed, and they would, they would come up something, anything to try and prove that the test was flawed.

Yes, which is why it bothers me so much that this test fell through! Had it been pulled off it would have been one of the highest-profile listening tests to date, and great evidence to bring to the discussions I quite frequently have on the topic.

No it would not, they would have called foul.

mcg - I think you're jumping the gun. It hasn't been called off yet. In fact, Randi sounds perfectly willing to continue the protocol negotiation:
Randi said:
Of course, the pertinent question is whether he’ll ever get around to actually doing the test, and from the long-winded fuss he’s been raising on line, that’s looking less and less likely...

Like I said: Pear Cables won't supply their cables, and Randi's rejected the other two choices. I think I can understand why Mr. Fremer has walked away at this point. Now perhaps one of the other candidates will step up, but Randi's gonna have to get over his fear of cable doctoring I think.

I didn't say it would silence the debate. It would however have been useful evidence. Again, my interest is not in convincing hard-core believers. I'm having a debate about this over on the AVSForum right now and one thing is clear, nobody is changing their mind. It's the newcomers to the field that are worth fighting for here. And for them, evidence like this test would have been very useful.

Believers do not know that believe is not truth, and many, if not all, have no understanding of electronics and/or the limitations of human hearing.

What name do you go by there.

How is that different from:
Skeptics do not know that science is not truth, and many, if not all, have no understanding of psi and/or the limitations of human testing.

At least with the audiophiles, they believe in technology and can see that technology is closely related to science. As long as we don't outright dismiss them, there is a chance we can teach them how to setup a proper test and help them actually improve their systems and avoid the snake oil.

If we just keep saying it's all snake oil it will lock in the perception that skeptics are all wacko's that can be ignored or played with but should never be taken seriously.

Not get over it; just ensure that the protocol controls for it.

Sounds like the challenge does involve judging?

I notice the challenge is still about a person, rather than the cables. If it was about the cables, the facts of the matter, anybody could test that. In fact, why not just test the cables and find out?

You don't need any one person to test technology.
