I've Moved To Mac

... do Macs still require you to use a postscript printer? That simplified the driver situation considerably in the past, but surely it's too restrictive today.

I have no idea what a postcript printer is, but I got my first Mac laptop last Saturday. On Tuesday, I wanted to print a recipe. My first thought was "oh crap, I don't know where to get the drivers for the printer!" But then I thought I would try to print it anyway, and it might give me a clue as to what I had to do next. Imagine my surprise when it found my network printer and printed the recipe without having to do anything! The "no drivers" aspect of Mac has pleased me greatly.

'Twas ever so! :D

Certainly not the released version of Safari*!

The what? Are you attempting to refer to the BETA version that was recently made available? - (with everybody very well informed that it was a beta.)

There's a difference between "released" software and "beta" software, y'know. ;)

The actual released Safari, v2.0.4, is rock solid.

(*This by the way is a simple fact only IE 6 & 7 support all of vBulletin's features or rather vBulletin was wrote with IE 6 (and now 7) as its primary client-side platform. Yes Jelsoft's development priorities can sometimes be stupid - long time Opera user on Mac & PC & Wi & phone opinion)

"Was wrote?" Ahem. Okay, it could happen to anybody.

vBulletin forum software is written to be hardware-independent, and browser-independent, as best that can be achieved.

What particular features of vB do you actually know of that supposedly don't work except with IE? You don't actually know of any, of course. (If you do, tell vb so they can fix it.)

You'd do better at argument if you weren't so obviously ignorant, and semiliterate at best. I happen to have a PC running beside this Mac as we speak. I already mentioned that in the thread, which might have been noticed by those who can read. You're just jumping in with an uninformed, blanket, ignorant outburst when you haven't even read the thread. Actually, that's no surprise from a Windows user.

It's Windows, itself, that does that to people. Windows is such a horrid crap-pile that Windows users inevitably go into denial, just from being subjected to it. Windows users quickly learn not to read what's on the screen, whenever they can avoid it, and they soon learn to pay as little attention to the crappy interface as possible. They also get cranky and irrational, like you, just from using Windows.

That would be you. Yes, you're fine.

Suddenly the thread is all about you.

It's a fact that the Mac is better for the average person, but a Windows user in denial wouldn't know that.

And the thread remains all about you.

Okay, we'll all mark it on the calendar that in 6 mos we can expect you back, to talk about yourself, again.

Wow, how arrogant. Why are Mac users like this? I guess "running a pc next to a mac" makes you the expert. I really don't care what OS you use but I can't complain about Windows. I run a small network with about 120 XP machines, 10 98 machines, and 9 Win2000 servers and the only support calls I've gotten in the last two weeks were from people moving desks and needed wire clips. Before that a monitor went out, but you can hardly blame the OS for that. One branch wanted to replace 6 PCs that were going on 5 years old but were worried that they couldn't justify the cost because not one support call was made on them in all that time. Where are all these virus-ridden, crashing, freezing PCs I keep hearing about? Where are all the unhappy users? I'm beginning to think they are like bigfoot, I keep hearing about them but never see them.

If you prefer Mac, fine. If you prefer Linux, fine. If you prefer Windows, fine. Go ahead and get in a pissing match over the color the buttons are or what icons look like, it's all opinion and preference. But please don't get all insulting because someone doesn't agree with you. Religions do that, not true techies.

For the record, I have 7 computers at home and two of them are Macs, but even my kids won't use them. I don't insult them, it's just a matter of preference. Even the classroom teachers who have an agency supplied PC and a school supplied Mac tells me they sometimes go weeks without turning on the Mac. I guess you have your experiences, and I have mine.

(By the way, before you claim I insulted you, I didn't. I called you arrogant. This is just a statement of fact. People are either arrogant or they are not. And you are simply one of the arrogant ones.)

What, specifically, is it about the Windows OS interface that you find so absolutely horrible?

In my experiences with the two, it's remarkably similar in how they construct an abstraction for the underlying system. Comparing a clean install of the Mac OS to a clean XP install (to avoid problems with system builders that like to "spice up" Windows with stuff that makes the computer run like a boiled turd) seems like PS3 vs. Xbox 360 or Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD fanboy BS to me.

But maybe I'm just missing something. What do you find to be more useful/friendly/whatever about your Mac, being a user of both systems?

Wow, how arrogant.

Yes, Windows users are arrogant. That often happens when people have no facts.

... Why are Mac users like this?

I don't know why Windows users are like that, except that being exposed to Windows all day apparently damages their minds.

... I guess "running a pc next to a mac" makes you the expert.

Well, it certainly makes me more of an expert than people who can only guess that maybe a Mac needs a postscript printer.

Are you reading the thread at all, or are you just another character who dropped by to spout his ignorance, and try to assert his own importance? Never mind, I know the answer.

... I really don't care what OS you use ...

Good.

... but I can't complain about Windows.

Then don't.

... I run a small network with about 120 XP machines, 10 98 machines, and 9 Win2000 servers ...

Congratulations. I'm sure your career fascinates you intensely.

... Where are all these virus-ridden, crashing, freezing PCs I keep hearing about? ...

Oh, people just make all that up to tease you.

(By the way, before you claim I insulted you, I didn't. I called you arrogant. This is just a statement of fact. People are either arrogant or they are not. And you are simply one of the arrogant ones.)

You're just another lying Windows user, obviously. That's no insult, of course, it's merely a factual statement about you, personally. People are either honest, or liars, and you're simply one of the lying ones. So don't try to claim you've been insulted.

It's Windows that does that. Long-term Windows use will damage your mind, and turn you into a liar.

Oh, the semiliteracy of a Windows user. It's Windows that causes that. I've already posted TWICE in this thread that I use both OS's, but habitual Windows users are so abused by the system to which they're subjected that they lose ability to read with normal comprehension.

More humility!

Where does it come from?

Are you havin' a laugh? Is 'e havin' a laugh?

It's Windows that does that. Long-term Windows use will damage your mind, and turn you into a liar.

You do, of course, have some kind of evidence of this, right? (unless you are havin' a laugh, in which case you can forget this part)

So, in your opinion, what is the fundamental difference between the two that makes Macs so vastly superior and Windows PCs a load of crap?

Annnnnd JeffJo has officially popped his cork.

It does make my life easier though. No further reply to that post needed. It speaks for itself.

Please point out, exactly, where I lied. Until you can I can only believe that you are a 14 year old living in your parent's basement who just got a mac for his birthday and searched for forums where mac vs pc debates were going on and thought you would join this one so you could insult PC users. This forum is for opened-minded individuals, not people who condemn things without evidence. You are new here, but you will see that. I'll bet even some Mac users we taken aback at such arrogance. Continue to post, you are only proving my point.

And answer some of the other poster's questions. What do you find so wrong with Windows? Again, until you can hold an intelligent debate without hurling insults, you are just a troll. PCs and Macs (and others) all have their place, just because you have one set up next to the other and prefer one doesn't make you an expert. Come back when you've made your own mother board from a kit (yes, I'm that old, and yes, the kit was Apple) and we'll talk.

Only 4 1/2 days on this forum. He popped his cork before he got here.

Why do I get the feeling that JeffJo has never used a command prompt-based operating system?

I have no idea what a postcript printer is

Postscript is a page description language - a programming language that lets you define a page layout in a manner that can be portable between different machines. Kind of a forerunner of PDF, if you like. And also produced by Adobe in fact. It was developed when printers started to move away from golfball and daisywheel designs that could only produce text output, where you wanted to give the printer something more sophisticated than a string of ascii characters.

It produced pretty good results - you can still buy new postscript printers now - but the printers that supported it tended to be more expensive, pushing them out of range of a poor student like what I was.

Nowadays I could afford a Mac if I wanted one, but I don't know what I would do with it. In terms of being a computer it doesn't appear to offer anything different. In terms of GUI, Windows is an environment I've programmed under for most of my professional life, so I'm familiar with it. Vista is a definite improvement on previous versions of Windows, so I'm happy with what I've got. I don't doubt that Macs are good machines, but I have not been convinced that they are that much better, simply different. And impoverished student or no, I'm not convinced they're worth the premium.

I think the average users of both PCs and Macs are ignorant. I got called last week because security had detected that one of our computers had connected to a hacker site the week before. They were insisting that we run a virus scan on that computer before we could put it back on the network. When I got into the office, the techs were busy burning a CD to transfer the AV software to the affected machine. I had to explain that any proper virus would disable the AV before it could be detected.

I connected the affected laptop to the desktop machine with a standard FireWire cable, powered on the laptop while holding down the "T" key until the FireWire icon displayed. The AV software installed on the desktop automatically detected the hard drive in the laptop and started scanning it.

Anybody want to guess what viruses were found?
