I bring "tin foil".

Hello JREF people.

I come to you from an often-mentioned (rarely favorably) site, AboveTopSecret.com, as your friendly neighborhood skeptically-minded ambassador from the land of conspiracy theory.

I've seen a lot of misconceptions about "conspiracy theorists" (sometimes we're our own worst enemy) and hope I can help to at least shed some rational light on the subject.

If you have any questions, I'm more than happy to do what I can... otherwise, I'll poke around a bit.

I have a question. When you open up your favourite conspiracy theory website, do you dread reading the latest sinister revelations? Or do you enjoy it?

And welcome to the forum. :)

Perhaps you'll be the first to answer this question:

Can you point out one single error in the NIST reports or the 9/11 Commission report?

Welcome to the forum, Skeptic.

I agree that conspiracy theorists are their own worst enemies quite often. This comes from becoming so deeply wedded to one's beliefs that any evidence to the contrary is ignored or dismissed as "disinfo".

I would encourage you to look around; there are a lot of very, very smart people here in a lot of disciplines. You're sure to find an interesting debate somewhere.

Are Killclown and PDOHerty (+socks) also members of the forum? ;)

ETA: And welcome on Board, SkepticGuy. :)

It deponds on the author. ;)

There are many who create new speculations I dread, and a few who create ideas I very much look forward to reading. As with any field of research, opinion, and speculative meanderings, there is a certain signal-to-noise ratio that needs to be understood before the quality material can be identified.

Welcome SkepticGuy to the forum. I hope you are honest in your intention, for I am suspicious already, as you are exhibiting the first signs of what I have labeled the "Mark of Woo". I hope I am wrong.

TAM:)
Yep. Remember that long-anticipated "assault" of twoofers on the JREF forum, intended to swarm us and scatter our ranks? I think we're in that now. :boxedin:

They're trying different approaches. All failing. So we'll see what this guy does. Hope he's got his parachute with him.

I have found no facts from the 9/11 truth movement just lies. No experts with any value on any 9/11 topic.

What have you found?

Well... I'm no expert, and spend more time working to provide a soapbox then standing on one myself... but damned if we're not thinking alike... I did, but can't yet post URL's (as I have fewer than 15 posts):

Tell us a little bit more about you (that will probably help you get to the 15 posts mark ;) )

So you are the moderator in this conspiracy theory oriented website?

What do you find interesting in conspiracy theories in general?

The "Truth Movement" was founded on good ideas and intentions, but the predominant ranks of activists have severely hurt their cause. Let's be honest, many of the people actively involved in "9/11 Truth" would be out protesting the World Bank or similar issues if not for 9/11 and the Iraq war. These people are not conspiracy theorists, they're anti-establishment activists who have latched onto a conspiracy-driven issue.

The "movement" is besieged on all sides by:
1) Conspiracy profiteers promoting provocative theories to sell stuff
2) Politically passional activists seeking to protest almost anything
3) Attention seekers looking to draw a crowd with wild theories
4) Truly disturbed people with outlandish claims
5) And divisive manipulation by "gov'ment" meddling

Yes, even though I'm a skeptical critical-thinking conspiracy theorist, I have seen firm evidence to support #5, and we conspiracy folks have been documenting what has been popularized as "COINTELPRO" for decades (though that old-style term is now far too simplistic).

I've also met some honest-to-goodness 9/11 Truth people who really are trying to do good... and dislike many of the more provocative theories associated with their movement.

Please just pick one, I've just looked at the first link and it's just some guy who has claimed the fires never got above 300C, but links an entire NIST report to support that. I'm not about to try to figure out which exact part he was referring to! What I'm looking for is something like:

"On page 73 of NISTNVSTAR 1-6 it states ___________. This is wrong because __________."

An amazing sentence.

There ARE no misconceptions about CTs. The mindset is very well-defined, very consistently patterned and almost boringly predictable.

"Sometimes" you're your own worst enemy? Correction: ALWAYS.

"Rational light"? The words "rational" and "conspiracy theorist", being polar opposites, can only be used as points of difference in a discussion.

I hope you're not here to mount some kind of defense, or rationale, for being a conspiracy theorist. You'll be flamed rather rapidly. Possibly the only "defense" for being a conspiracy theory believer is youth.

I'm one of the owners, and the design and programming is my doing.

What do you find interesting in conspiracy theories in general?
It started with a bad experience with MUFON long ago (early 1980's) and has developed into a combined interest of "alternative topics" and very-large online communities (web 2.0 stuff).

While I've written on a number of conspiracy topics throughout the years, most of my direct involvement has been as the enabler of a "soapbox", not an originator of conspiracy speculation.

You can get a sense for some of my positions here:

A list of tall the threads I've created...

Thanks for the welcomes.

Thanks for answering. I asked the question because I was once a bit of a conspiracy theorist. I used to tell people the conspiracy I (kinda) believed in was like the scaries thing ever. Then it occured to me that I actually enjoyed reading the latest revelations, despite their supposed scariness. I used to enjoy them more whenever I'd had a bad day. That seemed a little bit odd to me...
