I'm not religious enough to call myself...

I tend to forget how nice it is to live in a country where nobody assumes you're religious and nobody even bothers to ask. I really can't remember the last time anyone asked. I mean, I do remember having the JWs at the door that one time, but I also remember I was carrying our youngest in my arms when I answered the door and he's 27 now.

JW comes to door. I hear enough to just raise one finger, then I shut the door.
Five minutes later, the JW is still there. He thought I wanted him to wait. Didn't go to the door. He wasn't bothering anybody by just standing there.

What & hell you mean, pushy on both sides? Atheists don't crash no airplanes into folks, nor drop
holy bombs on grade schools. When's the last time a atheist pushed a Watchtower in your face n
went, Are you WARSHED in the blood o the lamb?

Us atheists are peaceable sorts. I said peaceable, goddammit! Well, okay, somebodydammit.

When our almost 25 yo daughter was a baby we were providing respite care for other infants. One foster family, when dropping of their child with us, asked "what church do you go to?" Got around that one by saying that we would arrange for the child to be picked up later on that Sunday. That was the last time anyone assumed we might be religious.

Every few months around here it seems there is news of another church closing. This was at one time a rather religious community.

I generally don't bother answering the door to anyone unless I am expecting someone or some thing. Same with phone calls from numbers I do not recognize. Just can't be bothered to deal with most people. My phone and my front door are for my convenience and no one else's.

Oh, there are times when they walk into my lair and I'm in the mood for blood.

♫If you want blood, you got it!♫

When I was in the VA hospital preparing for a serious operation, the Chaplain came by (perhaps because there was a religion listed on my Service Record. But that was 40 years prior.) I informed him that I'd previously been through all the rigamarole, but didn't subscribe to that now. He asked what he should put down for a religion then. I said I had none, but If I had to say anything I'd say "non-theist". He says "OK, Secular Humanist", checks off the box, and goes on to the next guy.

Well, after all, religion is organized superstition, and where there's organization there's beaurocracy.
And where there's beaurocracy, there are forms to fill in, with lots & lots of widdle boxes to check
off, and don't you leave EVEN ONE empty!

Take it from a career beauocrat (ret.), who once checked a wrong box. I had a scar 'twas like a T, and now
''tis like an H.

Had to look that up because I was confused. Even though it's Shakespeare, I have a hard time visualizing how a "T" could be turned into an "H". I mean, it's not like you're moving matchsticks around!

Re: thread title. I generally don't call myself, as the line is usually busy and half the time I knew what I was going to say anyway.

I think I may have mentioned the fact that I'm an atheist once or twice. When proselytisers come to the door, I just say I'm not interested. I don't see much point in making them uncomfortable.

It is entertaining when they knock and you look rapidly up and down the street, asking "Do you have anyone else with you? Does anyone know you're here?"

*supremely deadpan* "Please... come in."

Yup. I have friends who are religious, mostly a mix of Christian and Muslim. And possibly a higher proportion than most British people because of the higher proportion of immigrants from more religious countries (especially from the Philippines*).

But religion is rarely mentioned. Except for festivals.

*There is a lot of semiconductor packaging industry there so many end up here as well.

It's not like people self-identify as atheists by wearing gigantic lowercase ts around their neck, or "John 3.16" tattooed on them.

I do it to piss people off.

It pisses christians and muslins off, because it's offensive to their sky-fairy.

And best of all, because it pisses off other atheists and agnostics who assume (correctly) that I go around being a loud-mouth bastard like Hitch, but more vulgar and not as smart.
