Merged Mercator projection to be phased out?

Be further warned that once we're done with Mercator, the shape of local maps can be problematic, too.

Spoiler, kinda nsfw-shaped map

We could save a lot of space on maps if we omitted oceans entirely. Just put the landmasses together with a blue border between them so people remember there may be a bit of a gap in real life.

This kind of idiocy didn't start in Togo
You keep trying to diminish this by name dropping Togo.

From the OP article you claim to have read:

"Togo, [...] spearheaded a campaign for the resolution on behalf of the African Union."

The African Union comprises 55 African countries.

At the UN session 164 countries voted in favour of the resolution to use the Equal Earth projection.

Only the US voted no.

Will you still say, "Poor little US and its tiny peepee"?

Oh gosh. You think a UN endorsement elevates this proposal. My view is that this proposal is exactly what the UN is good for.

"Oh, this map of Berkhamstead shows a place called 'The Moor'? Is there a Muslim inhabitant of medieval Spain there?"

Give me a ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ break.
I see there's been a misunderstanding. Let me clear it up for you:

I will never respect the idea of rejecting the Mercator projection because it makes your continent appear smaller than Greenland. I will never respect any argument that defends that rejection, nor any argument adjacent to that rejection. All of my commentary on this topic stems from that basic position I have, of disrespect for the premise.

There's no misunderstanding for you to attack. There's no unstated assumption you can leverage for some kind of gotcha moment. There's no hidden prejudice that you can hope to bring out into the open with cleverly-crafted interrogatories or sassy "analogies".

There's nothing here for you to win. My position is, the Togolese hopped in a clown car and drove it to the UN, and I'm going to point and laugh.

Better call it something else, or people will get the wrong idea. No joke.
Yeah, some people are stupid. And some people look for a reason to be offended. And some people know that words can have more than one meaning but look for the most offensive anyway. People have lived on the Yorkshire Moors for centuries. There is no reason to call it something else.
