Cont: The Russian Invasion of Ukraine part 9

(Using the Norwegian paper Aftenposten as a source here. Paper edition (8th of September), so can't link)
So special forces from the SBU (the Ukrainian security service) and HUR (Ukrainian intelligence/investigation services, which apparently is really powerful and even has its own military units) had a several hours long altercation on Kyiv's streets that escalated to fist fights and several men wounded by gunfire.

Apparently it started with the SBU detaining the second in command of a russian volunteer corps in the HUR. Apparently this unit is led by a Neo-Nazi called White Rex. According to the SBU, the HUR officer was collaborating with russian spies to assassinate a Chechen opposition leader visiting Kyiv. When they tried to bring him in for interrogation they were intercepted by the HUR who apparently ended up 'freeing' him. The HUR in turn claim the evidence is forged and an attempt to discredit Budanov.

There have also been scandals involving top people in the Ukrainian government, such as the 'Forrest Gump scandal'. The fact that it involves people high up in the government indicates it might be the 'top of an ice berg' involving a lot of people down the chain.

Either way, these are news I'd expect more to come out of Moscow, not Ukraine. I'm glad Ukraine is working to combat corruption, and are of course way ahead of the russians in this field, but it's a pity they apparently still have a way to go. They don't exactly need a violent inter-service power struggle, either.

On a brighter note, the leader of the free world is visiting Oslo for King Harald's funeral💛💙. I feel honoured that he made the trip.

RFU reports on strikes against Russian reinforcements, wiping them out before they can hold the line against Ukrainian advances:

I think that narrative that Russia continues to gain ground by inches, while Ukraine can only fall back and fall back, is at least a year out of date. For months now, all the reports and all the OSINT indicate that the situation has now more than reversed. The Ukrainians are the ones gaining ground to a degree that is tactically and strategically significant.

Still not significant .. deepstate.live says 0.14% for Ukraine in the whole last year. The Lyman gains are not included yet, but I doubt it would push it above 1%. But the trend has certainly reversed.

I didn't say it was significant in terms of total area.

Think it is significant in terms of who is actually "winning", at the moment.

99% of the territory Moscow currently occupies is not substantially defended. It's just behind the front line. Ukraine doesn't have to liberate 100% of the occupied territories. It only has to overrun Moscow's troop concentrations, strongpoints, and strategic locations. If they accomplish that, the rest of the countryside returns to their control as a matter of course.

And as it stands today - as it has stood for several months now - Ukraine is steadily, consistently, taking those key pieces of ground, that represent the high water mark of Muscovite offensive strength in Ukraine.

Too soon to celebrate. Situation will turn really bad if Moscow mobilizes after the "election". Ukraine has upper hand on strategic level now. But on the front it simply needs more men. And it's the one thing the West won't give.

it's never too soon to celebrate a successful Ukrainian operation. one operation at a time, is how I roll

It's Zekensky, check out the 💛💙 🇺🇦
Correct. The US president abdicated from that position in 2024.

Edit to add: Just noticed a familiar face in the funeral procession.

Amusingly when I was looking for the Ukraine emoji these were the other two options 🪆🚜

Layman's question: How many more men will russia be able to field at once? I'm asking because they seem to barely be able to equip and supply the ones on the front right now. This is probably wishful thinking, but I get the impression mobilization is just as much to keep russia in the war for longer since they have a serious recruitment problem?

What is this “equip and supply” of which you speak?

That's just a matter of time. Of course mobilized men won't be on the front the next day. It will take months. And their training and equipment will be basic, and their support will be non existent. But it will be a problem.

On the plus side, we've seen Russia do this song and dance a few times before. They've mobilized hundreds of thousands of men only to end up where they are now. Granted, Ukraine is struggling to recruit, having some issues with corruption and a bit of a problem with leadership, but overall we've seen them handle these mobilizations before. While Russia is fielding fresh faces, Ukraine is fielding seasoned veterans.

I also read a story about how Ukranians are making advancements with their missile program and it looks like they have some pretty impressive stuff on the horizon.
Ukraine has unveiled the launcher for its domestically developed Koral surface-to-air missile for the first time, revealing a significantly evolved weapon designed to engage both conventional aerial threats and ballistic targets.

...

According to Militarnyi, the missile is being developed primarily as an air defense interceptor capable of engaging both aerodynamic and ballistic targets. Its developer says that, in exceptional circumstances, it could also be used against radar-visible targets on land or at sea.

That could be a real game-changer for Ukraine. I don't know that Russia is really advancing forward with their military technology. It kind of seems like they're counting on zerg tactics and nothing more.
