Merged Arday life and death

Arday was not hired because he was 'DEI' [sic]. There was a vacancy either created or existent for the Sociology of Physical Education. There was a proper (as laid down by prior edict) application and interview process, including gaining references and checking qualifications.
Bollocks.
He was picked because he ticked a lot of "EDI" boxes including black, young and neurodivergent, and he seemed to have acheived a lot in the face of those disadvantages. Of course, we now know this was a pack of lies and fantasies, which Cambridge should have known, and could have easily found out if they had bothered to do a proper background check.

It would be a contradiction to use a concept from a subject that is purely interpretitve as an absolute standard for judging other subjects.
You really seem to be laboring under the false impression that I don't respect soft sciences.
If you are going to defend the term and explain what you mean by it, then you have adopted it regardless of whether or not you used it first.
I didn't use the term. Read that again. One more time. Here let me repeat it for you: I am not the one who used the term.

I explained the term, but I didn't use it. Jesus ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ christ.

Your logic is broken if people aren't allowed to explain what a phrase means without somehow being seen to advocate for the phrase. It would end up meaning that every single time someone here explains what the term "fascist" means, that results in them having adopted and signed on to fascism.

Not to derail, but I've never really understood the difference between inquiry and enquiry, inquiring and enquiring. Would you mind taking a moment to explain?

(Of course, if this is another will/shall thing, I'm Scottish, you're doomed to failure.)
Honestly, I think it's an across the pond thing. Google says enquiry is a request, where inquiry is a formal investigation in UK speak, but US generally uses inquiry for both.

Realistically, my comment wasn't a language correction though. The phrase "Enquiring minds want to know" was the tag-line for The National Enquirer.

When done well, the soft sciences can be pretty scientific. The problem right now is that so often they aren't done well. We see signs of that in things like the replication crisis, which is also hitting some of the harder sciences like medicine.

I wouldn't have thought so, it wasn't his PhD work that was cited was it?
Do you think his subsequent work radically improved from his thesis writing? That would actually be rather remarkable, if true.

From a woman who is uniquely qualified to know and understand what it is like to be vilified, cancelled and receive death threats as a member of academia because she dared to question the preferred narrative.

Big difference. Kathleen Stock believed she was right. Jason Arday knew in his heart of hearts that he was a fabulist and a plagiarist. If you truly believe you're right you'll find a lot more inner strength than you'll ever get defending something you know to be a falsehood.

For the umpty-ninth time, discrimination on the grounds of race, sex, sexuality, religion, disability or pregnancy is illegal in the UK, under Employment Law. Employers are not allowed to discriminate, except under limited circumstances. For example, schools or care homes of a particular religious denomination or where a personal characteristic such as a disability or gender is inherently specific to a job role. The UK is not the USA. There is no legal requirement to take on 'DEI' hires. Stop making up bogeymen. There were four shortlisted candidates for the professorship and Arday was the successful one.

Yes, but in history and archeology you are not designing bridges and planes, you are uncovering facts about the world. You can use the Rosetta Stone to decode an ancient language, not according to your feelings (JFK!), but according to what is most coherent.
Yes and no. Ideally yes, and often yes. But there's a whole lot of history that isn't necessarily fact. History is written by the winners, and what the winners say happened isn't always what actually happened. Especially when the thing you're trying to uncover is why it happened. We don't even have to go that far back in history to see this in action... The way Democrats and Republicans describe events happening right now are vastly different interpretations of events. Hell, can you imagine if the only surviving history books end up being Trump's twitter posts? There will be the fact of those posts existing, but it doesn't mean that what Trump says is factual in and of itself.

The same is true for archeology. Yes, a lot of it is factual. But there's also a whole lot of assumption and interpretation involved. Was that particular weird shaped ceramic bowl actually used for ritual purposes? Or was it just a fashionable art piece that survived and had no real function?

A lot of it includes good reasoning for why assumptions make sense based on what little we know, but that doesn't mean it's all factual. And whether you like it or not, current beliefs and feelings absolutely do influence the interpretation of historical events.

well they could have and they didn't, and there are people who are and should be genuinely concerned that, and then there's people that aren't. if it was a boring stem guy that lied and cheated and made up stories, a lot of people wouldn't give a ◊◊◊◊ about it, and people will pretend they're not doing that when they are. and it's not a mystery when that's going on.
Give me a boring stem person who lied and cheated in their academic career, and had plenty of evidence of such lies and got hired into a position they were unqualifed for, then were boosted by the university that hired them and lauded as a great academic mind, who then tried to intimdate and silence people who said "hey, they're a cheat and here's the evidence", and we'll see whether or not I give a ◊◊◊◊ about it.

Arday was not 'unqualified'.

I think the opposite is true. The replication crisis exposed something that was the norm and is now being fixed. Essentially papers pre-2011 or so in many social sciences, particularly those making grand claims, are not worth the paper they are printed on, because of p-hacking and academic degrees of freedom.

With medical science there tends to be other serious issues such as outright data and image fraud (Western blots being duplicated and resized). The ivermectin-cures-Covid fiasco came about, in some papers, from people often literally copying and pasting the same data over and over again.

If he wasn't a black dude, he'd never have gotten so far.
Utter nonsense. As mentioned before, once you get in at entry level, your previous qualifications no longer matter. For example, one of my bosses in Insolvency Practice left school at fifteen, failed his eleven-plus, yet went on to be one of the highest earning Insolvency Practitioners in the industry. Nobody cared he had no O-Levels, never mind a good degree or a chartered accountancy like his peers. (I should say, regulations have now tightened up and you have to pass the tough JIEB exams.). The point is, Arday WAS a PhD and he was a Professor. He became a Professor at Glasgow Uni in 2022. He was not taken on 'because he was a black dude'.
