Trump's Second Term

Yes, his lawyers are trying to amend the claim against the BBC to focus on reputational loss rather than financial loss, so that the financial records are unnecessary.

Trump suing for reputational loss because something mean was said about him? So many people could come against him on these grounds.
I know UK has different thresholds for that type of thing than here. What's the conventional wisdom? Does that normally work?

Reputational loss? How could his reputation go any lower? John Wayne Gacy was a swell guy compared to him!

I posted this in the general 2026 thread, and if these threads don't get merged, well here we go:

The short gist, MAGA in Michigan are not energized this year.

From https://www.270towin.com/2026-election-results-live/state/michigan/primary

Abdul won 48.5% to Steven's 47.5%
Overall there were just over 1.5 million votes cast in the primary. Unfortunately, Rogers ran unopposed in the republican race, so no vote count there.

Scrolling to the governor races, Benson won the dem race with 83% of the just under 1.5 million votes. On the GOP side, James pulled 49.8% of ~935000 votes.

The take away is in the primary, known for when the die hard voters come out, the dems got 1.5 million people out to vote. The GOP got 935k, a 565000 deficit.

In 2024, Trump won the state with 2.8 million to Harris' 2.7. It was pretty close there.

From an on the ground view in Michigan in 2026, the GOP/MAGA are just not feeling it here. The flags, hats, bumper stickers that were everywhere two years ago are gone. I think Abdul can win the election come November, provided he doesn't pull a Platner.

Ah, his achilles heel. I think he's as scared of his financials coming out as he is a looming impeachment.
Well, a major US bank just froze a number of his accounts on suspicison they were being used for money laundering..something they usually do only when the acccounts are suspected of being owned by a Certain Italian American Fraternal Organization, to use Tony Boudain;s expression.

Hard to believe that "Wings" were banned by the BBC! (well unless they let Linda sing)
I would have thought it was the other way around.
Or am I thinking Yoko Ono. Perhaps both.
Ah, his achilles heel. I think he's as scared of his financials coming out as he is a looming impeachment.
most certainly the reason for the beeb’s lawyers going down this route.

Also for ◊◊◊◊◊ and giggles…lawyers might be from the Light Entertainment Division.

The case has been brought in Florida. The BBC are trying to get the case struck out on the basis that it was never broadcast or streamed in the US. The BBC has no 'residence' in Florida. Trump is claiming residence in Florida and of course thinks a Florida jury would favour POTUS over a foreign left wing woke MSM organisation.

The BBC also sought records of Trump's communications and conversations on January 6 to provide evidence of Trump's involvement in the 6 January riots; the judge denied discovery of white house documents, but ordered Trump to disclose his financials since he was claiming financial loss. Trump has appealed the order to disclose his financials and is now trying to drop that part of the case.

I assume the relevant bit of Florida law is 'defamation per se'.

In a standard defamation case, the plaintiff must prove that the defendant's false statement actually caused them financial harm (lost clients, lost income, lost business deals). In a defamation per se case, certain categories of false statements are considered so inherently destructive that the law presumes the plaintiff suffered damages.

The Four Categories

Florida recognizes four categories of statements that constitute defamation per se:
  1. False Accusation of a Crime — Falsely stating that a real estate developer committed mortgage fraud, embezzlement, or bribery.
  2. False Accusation of a Loathsome Disease — An archaic category that is rarely litigated in modern real estate disputes.
  3. False Accusation of Sexual Misconduct — Falsely accusing a business professional of sexual harassment or assault.
  4. Statements Harmful to One's Business or Profession — This is the category most relevant to real estate. Falsely stating that a contractor uses substandard materials, that a real estate agent is under investigation for fraud, or that a developer is bankrupt can devastate their professional reputation and livelihood.

So Trump could claim he was falsely accused of insurrection or treason, and this claim might affect his chance of re-election in 2028. Or might affect his reputation as a real estate developer. This might be why he is so sensitive about the reflecting pool because people may not trust a real estate developer who can't successfully renovate a pool.

There is very little in the GOP/Trump defense against the newer Democrats. Basically calling it communism. But one thing we do not need to drag into the election is Israel. The candidates can have their views but there are so many ways to fight Trump that Israel can be left out. A very devisive issue. I was surprized about the various immigrant groups reacting to it last time.
Israel is only divisive because foreign terrorist groups like AIPAC buy politicians to act against America's interests. If it were up to voters, Israel would have been dropped for its many crimes against humanity a couple of decades ago.

Hurty words!

I don't think so. The discrepancy there is not because he's changed. His opinion about deserving it might well not even have changed. Rather, the situation has changed and he's simply acting in the way that he thinks is most likely to get him what he wants.
At this point, I think we can all agree: He has definitely changed!!!

Clarence's Life Matters!

'It ALWAYS leaked since 1922!': Trump DOUBLES DOWN on Reflecting Pool fixation during ABSURD RANT (MS NOW on YouTube, Aug 6, 2026 –11:18 min.)
Trump can't quit his fantastical claims about vandalism at the Reflecting Pool despite his handpicked U.S. attorney acknowledging the botched renovation was due to a contractor issue. Trump's delusions might look trivial – but Tom Nichols and Ben Rhodes say they're dangerous.

I strongly disagree with Nichols and Rhodes! We should be supportive of Trump's delusions! They are his only positive contribution to the world we live in!!!

This is something Google tells me about the Reflecting Pool:
At the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., hot summer days cause water loss from evaporation to exceed 50,000 gallons per day. This natural loss combines with structural leakage issues, prompting continuous replenishment via the National Park Service water systems. [1, 2]

Somebody, please tell Trump the story about Clarence, the blue giraffe! Please, please, please!
It would be such a great addition to his anecdotes about wet magnets, electric vessels, sharks, cancerous windmills and bleach as an antiviral.
A Cold Stunt, Clarence Rules, More Magnets, a Chiropactic Victory, and Kudos to Parapsychologist Wiseman (Archive.Randi.org, Dec 1, 2000)
The Kansas Board of Education voted today to eliminate mandatory teaching of the theory of evaporation from schools across the state. Most scientists believe that water and other liquids are spontaneously converted by so-called evaporation into the form of a gas, and carried off into the atmosphere. This, they say, is the explanation behind sudden disappearances of water all across the state.
Many non-scientists, however, stand by the widely accepted theory that a lovable invisible two-headed thirsty blue giraffe named Clarence is responsible for the disappearances. The two theories, evaporation and Giraffism, will now be taught on a more equal footing to school-children across Kansas. Parents are pleased, saying that Giraffism is easier to understand and far more comforting to small children. "There's nothing happy about evaporation," says Frank Nubbins, father of Jason, 6, and Sue Ellen, 4. "Clarence the giraffe is blue, and he's lovable. You can't say that about evaporation, that's for sure. I love my children."
"Nobody has ever adequately explained evaporation," says Dr. Harold Thumper, of the Kansas Board of Education. "With evaporation, we're expected to imagine that water just disappears, all by itself, with no rhyme or reason. That's ridiculous."
Clarence the lovable invisible two-headed blue giraffe, on the other hand, is always thirsty, an explanation which is simple and obvious. He has a well-established presence in children's literature. "Every culture on the planet," says Dr. Thumper "has a story about giraffes, or thirstiness, or lovable blue things. Most of these have happy, happy endings. My children just love these stories. But I challenge you to find a single good story about evaporation."
The theory of evaporation is getting a dry reception in academia these days. At leading universities including Harvard, Stanford, and MIT, it's impossible to find a single professor of Evaporation on the faculty. "What's the point?" says Gwen O'Malley, dean of the Harvard Medical School. "It's not exactly a good career move to spend your life trying to explain evaporation to people."

I had a hard time finding the link. Not even when I googled "theory of evaporation" "blue giraffe" Clarence, did Google come up with anything useful. If I hadn't translated the story into Danish a very long time ago, I doubt that I would have been able to find the link.

So please, please, don't let Clarence die! Let Trump know about Clarence, so he can be immortalized!
I live in the infamous giraffe-killing country, and this is the only way I can make up for our sins!

Speaker Mike Johnson
@SpeakerJohnson

It’s no longer Republican vs. Democrat.

It’s not even common sense vs. crazy.

It’s America-loving vs. America-hating COMMUNISTS, and today’s Democrat Party has shown us who they really are.

Democrats want to destroy America. Republicans LOVE America and will FIGHT to keep the United States the greatest country in the history of the world
