I too just looked for the Maines cover. Found a youtube of her singing it live on the Howard Stern show - just her and an acoustic guitar acompanyist - that I like even better than the recorded version.

I remember some interview or other where Waters was criticizing, or rather, mocking some of Floyd's, or more pointedly, Gilmour's lyric's post Roger. I think specifically, On The Turning Away. Whether one agrees or not, I thought that, you know, you're not exactly Shelley or Keats yourself.

Same in the States, I think. 'No dessert if you don't eat your dinner' was a staple in my upbringing and my kids grew up with it too.

Although it never made sense to me, because I didn't much care for sweets but would devour all the chicken or pot roast etc I could get my hands on.

He froze himself out. He was credited with writing eight of eleven songs on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, with shared credit on two more. On A Suacerful of Secrets, he was credited with writing only one song, the short (3:00) Jugband Blues. This wasn't because of any effort by the others to exclude him, or limit his participation. He was so fried on psychedelics by then that they could not rely on him any longer, either for creative input or live performances. They've described their decision to move on without him after the second studio album as a sad, but necessary step. They said they missed the charming, witty, creative mad genius they'd known in the earliest days of the band, but that person was no longer available.

You can't teach me anything; I once fly posted for Blackhill Enterprises. 'Syd' was an undiagnosed (then) schizophrenic. He was also arty and creative; the weird genius impetus behind early Pink Floyd, although I note your attempt to brush him off as inconsequential. I don't care what your Wikipedia PR says, his bandmates treated him appallingly.

Waters in Brick in the Wall makes the common mistake of equating creativity with anarchy, whilst a catchy ditty utilising Islington Green junior school children with cod norf Lunnon badly-grammatical lyrics, there's nothing edgy about it. At least Johnny Rotten's anarchy was genuine social anger, coming as he did from Holloway working class Irish who never escaped the community or social housing trap, as their dads, who largely built UK infrastructure, never got onto the mortgage ladder having been forced to work 'cash in hand' (or so my good friend Neil used to tell me).

Anarchists are the worst form of political structure IMV, libertarianists, in which the strong trample the weak.

Yeah yeah everyone thinks Wish you were here and DSOTM is great but I stopped listening after Ummagumma. Just another over-commercialised band.

Just my 2p worth.

Uhhhhh, so now the fact that one once wielded a wallpaper brush and a backpack full of leaflets makes one an expert? I once had a job delivering the Penny Saver, does that mean I'm an expert on garage sales and thrift shops?

Also, @Foster Zygote hardly made him out to be "inconsequential". He literally listed him as having written in whole or in part every song on the entire first album!
