Scientists have a disconcerting convention of saying "evidence has not been found for X causing Y" which invariably is being interpreted as "we have not looked hard enough".

The claim that "Republicans do not cause stupidity" is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that Republicans cause stupidity.

Furthermore, Trump's cabinet does suggest some degree of correlation.

Sometimes when a correlation is identified it can be hard to separate cause and affect, perhaps it isn't that Republicanism causes stupidity, but ...

Republicans do not cause stupidity. Stupidity causes Republicans. That's the correlation.

At Unbiased Science Jess Steier covered the Fauci hearings. Colleagues who worked under him for years told The Atlantic they never knew how he voted, and he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush before Barack Obama called him a once-in-a-century public health leader."

She continued, "The harder problem is that we can measure what the closures cost, because those costs happened to us. We can’t measure what they prevented, though, because prevention is invisible when it works. There’s a name for this in public health, the prevention paradox. Do the job well and you end up in a room full of people asking why you bothered. Every cost of the closures has a face and a household attached to it. The deaths that didn’t happen have neither, because there’s no list of them and never will be. We know what the spring of 2020 looked like in New York with those measures in place. What it would have looked like without them exists only in models."
