Merged How Close is power from Nuclear Fusion

Yeah, I watched that over the weekend, my faith is not bolstered. 😛
Felt a bit cheerleader-ish, especially having the company officer babble on for a quarter of the video.
But if you want to see the entire interview, you can find it on the Doctor's page. 🤣

If the images of the equipment are real, those are some huge machines they have built!

They should just give up. Ten years will be too late. The Bros are "on the cusp" of a breakthrough.

"further their research towards creating a clean fusion power source capable of being scaled up to commercial output". Is exactly the sort of progress we need.
;)

It's great isn't it? Telling us the blindingly obvious.

Still, it fooled Shane "Mr Watching Porn on the Ministerial Visa" Jones into coughing up $35m of tax dollars to keep the bros in KFC while they ponder.

Something to consider: Deuterium/Tritium fusion reactors could easily produce uranium or plutonium for nuclear weapons.

Just to be sure, Researchers want money to build Anti-Neutrino detectors that would be able to register attempts to create fissionable material in a fusion reactor.

Eh? I thought fusion stopped way short of uranium etc. Or is that a joke article?

Quite the achievement.

It's a paper by Los Alamos scientists who are probably smarter than most of us
I'm not talking about the paper. I'm talking about the Gizmodo article, and about the scientists' cynical and transparent ploy to use the paper for fearmongering to justify asking for money.

We are already concerned about the illicit extraction, manufacture, and transfer of uranium and plutonium. We already have a vested interest in detecting such things, and we already invest substantially in tools and processes to do so.

It'd be nice if we lived in a world where any scientist who wants a decent anti-neutrino detector can just ask and receive. But we don't. So unfortunately we have to consider the hypothetical where someone has mastered fusion power, but also needs nukes and doesn't already have them.

Ah, though you'd need non-fissionable isotopes of uranium to work on?
Not hard to get if you have any traditional reactors.
The point of peaceful nuclear proliferation was that the accepted reactor design did not produce any material for military use.
Fusion reactors would change that.

But then, we will see the return of the Breeder Reactor anyway, as it's the best way to turn nuclear waste that's dangerous for 10,000 years into nuclear waste that's dangerous for 1,000 years.

Maybe fusion reactors would simply change some clauses of the peaceful nuclear proliferation protocols. Like, "don't proliferate breeder reactors, [ETA 1/1/2126: including fusion-based breeder reactors, obviously. It should go without saying, but here we are.]"

In the artifcle, these scientists talk like nobody ever considered the problem of breeder reactors before these guys looked into the details of a controlled fusion reaction. In fact, fusion reactors won't chnage anything, since as you say the problem of breeder reactors is already known. These guys didn't have to appeal to a hypothetical new breeder reactor design, to make a case for getting money to build a fancy new detector.
