North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said the fact a Reform UK-led council was thinking of not building an arena because of AI was "absurd".

Construction of the Gateshead venue was originally due to begin in autumn 2023 but has faced multiple setbacks, with the Labour mayor pledging millions of pounds towards the project earlier this year.

Council deputy leader Fiona Pearce said support could be withdrawn if it was deemed to be poor value. She told the Local Democracy Reporting Service she had asked AI to analyse figures for the development, with its conclusion being it would be "better value to leave a hole in the ground".

Kent County Council trying the American right wing playbook;

It seems that as well as being regressive and divisive, it's more insidious than it may at first appear. It's also a way of reducing the time the opposition leaders have to speak.

The vote at the council’s annual meeting on 21 May saw 48 councillors back reciting the Lord’s Prayer and 45 back singing the national anthem – while approving a cut to all opposition leaders’ response time to make way for it. Opposition time will be cut by a minute each, leaving Labour’s Leader with only two minutes.

The Green Group suggested that any reduction in speaking time be reflected in the Leader’s speaking time, reducing from 16 minutes to 14, but that suggestion was rejected by the administration as unreasonable.
