It's fanciful to say the Strait must remain open, when it isn't open because you're conducting a war there.

Xi opposes the militarization of the Strait. Did you get the message: he doesn't want it full of your navy? Xi also opposes any effort to charge a toll for its use. Do you remember floating the idea that you might do that?

And even if that were true so what? If someone burgles a house would that make it okay for you to rob someone elses? And for that matter the sheer scale of Trumps corruption dwarfs anything that Congress can achieve. But of course you don't care, any deflection will do.

It cost him nothing and if it makes easier to get Trump to abandon Taiwan or cut tariffs, or whatever else Xi wants its an easy choice.
