On a quick look, it looks like restaurants may ask for ID if you're buying alcohol. More usually, a bar may ask for ID for the same reason. That does add potential context for what he chooses an establishment to do, but doesn't really reduce the level of disconnectedness and BS in what he said. The one "positive" thing I can say about it is "at least it wasn't yet another claim that grocery stores require ID to enter."

I'm quite old, but I don't think the rules have changed that much, showing your lad in a restaurant is a definite faux pas.
Just getting people used to the idea, before you need to show your ration card.
Yeah, they're really adopting the idea that they all have to sound as dumb as their Führer.
Suggesting it is wrong. They are certainly doing it, but you can't say that.
