Autistic genius novelist woos the literary world with novel composed using "Facilitated Communication"

You're the one claiming a conspiracy.
Irrelevant bollocks. I'm making no such claim, nor is anyone else here.

Address the point. You claimed that Woody could communicate through someone other than his mother. The person you named turned out not to be able to do that.

Do you have anyone else, or will you concede that all communication from Woody comes through one person, and just that one person?

Well I'm claiming a conspiracy of sorts. I prefer the term "conspiracy hypothesis", and my hypothesis goes something like this:

High school and college administrators suspect the truth, but have decided discretion serves them better than challenging Woody's mom's narrative. The book publisher especially benefits by playing along. The eventual authorship scandal won't harm their reputation much, and in the meantime they get to sell books.

Some grand conspiracy to manufacture a false narrative, spanning several educational institutions? No. A tacit acquiescence to the mom's obviously suspect narrative? I think almost certainly.

When does a plan become a conspiracy?
I would say any time the existence or details of a plan need to be concealed, because someone will find the objective undesirable, it's a conspiracy. In this case, I'm alleging a conspiracy by omission. Various gatekeepers are declining to speak up about the person(s) they allowed to pass through their gates.

William Faulkner once said to wannabe Creative Writers, 'Kill your darlings', by which he meant get rid of fondly held writing tools such as purple prose. Likewise, in the same vein, please let go of your fondly held dogma, re FC=bad. Don't be afraid.
This is more of your nonsense. Facilitated Communication is nonsense.

you regularly remind us that you have a psychology degree from a UK university, so hows about you take up "your fondly held dogma, re FC = bad" with the BPS:

NB, this is not, per other posts, "wiki says" etc...

ETA Tl;dr - "Unfortunately, FC has also been completely discredited. In order to test the validity of FC, researchers carried out simple blinded studies. They showed the nonspeaking person one picture and showed their facilitator a different picture. They then asked what was on the picture, using FC. When the facilitator did not know the answer, the nonspeaker could not give a correct answer 100% of the time. When the facilitator and the nonspeaking person were shown the same picture, the FC-generated answer was correct. The conclusion was inescapable; the facilitator had to know the answer to the question in order for the right answer to be generated using FC. Communication generated by FC came from the facilitator, not the nonspeaking person."
That is an excellent piece. Thanks.

Yes, I am aware of the so-called Telepathy Tapes. But Woody's mother is not claiming telepathy. The stuff being referred to is persons with cerebral palsy and who have severe learning difficulty. In addition an article on BPS webpage is one person's view. It's not necessarily the official view. However the official view - which is followed in Disability legislation - is that it is not to be used for such persons. Woody is not such a person.

BTW please do not bring up any of my personal details without my having brought it up first.
You're avoiding the point. Facilitated Communication is utterly discredited and considered nonsense by every professional body

When does a plan become a conspiracy?
I suppose when people agree with each other about what the plan is, and that they'll keep quiet about it. I mean if the publishers really had a meeting to talk through the "what if she's lying?" scenario then you might get to call that a conspiracy but realistically they probably have innumerable "what if" meetings about their clients and they're not all conspiracies just because the discussion is confidential.

You're the one claiming a conspiracy.
Between whom?
The Mom and the publishers plus the higher schools of learning.
No! We are claiming that The Mom is committing fraud, and that the publishers and the higher schools of learning are victims of that fraud.

A robbery is not a conspiracy between the robber and the robbed.

The issue about facilitated communication being "unethical" is because it doesn't work.
And because it exploits disabled people, frequently for commercial gain.

Who is spending the money that is being made from publishing the book, and on what are they spending it?

Likewise, in the same vein, please let go of your fondly held dogma, re FC=bad. Don't be afraid.
Oh, we should be more open-minded? Be skeptical of our skepticism? Now where have I heard that before?

To be clear: I'm not one of those claiming that the publisher and the schools are victims of fraud.

For the publisher, I'm hard pressed to see how they even could be victimized in this scenario. They're generating revenue, and they don't really have to care about who exactly the author is. Even if it turns out the mom was lying the whole time, the publisher still got paid.

For the schools, my hypothesis is that they strongly suspect the mom is perpetrating shenanigans, but see no benefit to calling her out. And again, they're still getting paid, right? Someone's covering the kid's tuition.

That's a hypothesis that has merit. Given the absolute ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ that publishers routinely put out, they don't care about the truth status of books at all.

Unless the school comes good and starts getting actual verification from someone other than The Mom, I guess we'll never know.

Oh, crap. There's two of them now. Abandon thread! It has become infected with contrarians!

Maybe if we leave them to their own devices for a while they'll knee-jerk each other into a logical impasse, and bugger off. Maybe tomorrow I'll inherit a life-changing sum of money from a hitherto unknown distant cousin. Maybe tomorrow I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow I'll just keep moving on.

It's always annoying when a believer tells a sceptic they should be more open minded. Having an open mind means being open to the evidence and arguments against the thing you want to believe as well as in favour of it. Most believers refuse to even look for, let alone at, evidence against the belief in which they are emotionally invested.

I found where I'd heard it before.

PK, you are having issues with some of the arguments, but you did not tell us what it would take to change your mind. Can I assume that I was right that nothing can change your mind?
More information. As you saw in the example above, re Jason Adell, who was diagnosed as autistic and non-verbal until about age eleven. He didn't read or write until age eighteen, thanks to meeting an academic mentor who detected signs of intellect and encouraged it. He is now a professor at Cambridge University. So whilst no two autistic persons will be the same, some having a wider range of neurological, developmental and kinaesthetic issues than others, I can quite see that Woody came into his own after being labelled a non-learner by his school. In addition, Woody has two siblings. I don't see how you can conclude without knowing that he 'has never communicated with anyone but his mother'. Do you seriously think it likely Woody could get two degrees in English (NOT an easy subject) from prestigious universities if he was not 'all there'? I understand he is now doing a PhD. (Cue sound of boiling blood from youtuber influencers.)
