It could, even in theory, only apply to products with completely elastic demand. It's also just another expression of supply-side economics.
It also ignores that you want to maximize State allocatable funds, not just revenue: vice taxes reduce revenue by drastically reducing consumption, but they save the State money by reducing health costs - a State can absolutely maximise its total assets by taxing harmful activities into the ground.

I'm going to repeat, then. You're not arguing against the concept here, just some side things that are sometimes tacked on.

Seriously, the Laffer curve and its usage are pretty much classic right wing stuff. Quite literally, the Laffer curve is a basic illustration of a trivial truth that the right wing has consistently taken out of the larger context that shows that what they are trying to argue is that up is down and down is up. Arguing against that trivial truth itself and calling it BS is worthy of little more than an eyeroll and falls right into a trap. Of course it's not the only thing of relevance in the larger picture, but that doesn't negate its truth, just shows that it is utterly irresponsible to use it alone, given how vague and non-comprehensive it is to actually describe the far more complex reality.

Alternately, comparing it to "more CO2 helps plants grow better" in the climate change debate could be appropriate. That is entirely true as far as it goes. It's just that there's so very much more of relevance and the overall picture shows that the overall harm still greatly outweighs benefits like that.

He's gonna be even more pissed with Norway when he hears a Norwegian movie (Sentimental Value) won nine Oscars and they're not giving even one of them to poor diddly Dump. He will be even less inclined for peace and cooperation, in fact he might even take his ball and go home, deny us entry into the tree house with the cookies and comic books, and refuse to sit next to us in recess!

It is actually possible that the total amount of money stolen, over the years, by Corrupt Politicians and Fraudsters, from Minnesota, will exceed $100 Billion Dollars. In any event, whether it is or isn't, the Theft, Incompetence, and Fraud is MASSIVE! Sadly, whatever numbers we find, California, and other Democrat run States, WILL BE WORSE.

So bad that even if it's not true, it's still true.
And the others are even bigger crooks than the worst crooks.
And if that's not true either then it's all true anyway.
