I'm not sure about the gleeful part. There's a grim sort of integrity to that. He strikes me more as the kind who would hedge his bets and complain about the orders he's just following.

And she's a First Officer, not a Captain, so in the wrong seat, AND if she's flying she should be looking, or if on autopilot hands off the wheel, and there's something wrong with the throttles.
