Merged Charlie Kirk shot at Utah Valley University event. / Charlie Kirk Shot And Killed

After one day, two posters have said that Tom Paine was right. I find that a perfectly acceptable answer although it would be more interesting if those people explained why.

Well, the US has already had "mass political violence" for a while now. (Remember, all those ICE agents cracking down on people? Remember Trump's comments about how the "2nd amendment people can do something about Clinton"?) The difference here is that if the shooter IS a left-winger, then its just a case of the violence being less-than-one sided.

Would he really need his "Reichstag fire"? He's been deploying his fascist ICE troops for a while now, and the MAGAchud have been supporting him, even without some underlying trigger event.
If you the political violence that has happened so far in the US is "Mass Violence" you ain't seen nothing yet.

I wasn't aware of him before this, and I've since seen some commentators saying he was a more reasonable Trump supporter. On the other hand, he also posted this.

He was one of those your body, my choice guys. A real winner and now we're gonna fly the flags ar half-mast for this ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊. This is where the U.S. is now. The Stephen Millers, Laura Loomers, et al, have Trump's ear. Not Charlie anymore, I'm afraid.

(Tweet suggesting Ukraine president was the cause of 1 million deaths.)
Not really sure why someone might say Kirk was a "more reasonable Trump supporter".

I took a look at some of his activities/beliefs on his Wiki page... He pushed the "election fraud" myth, attacked gay and trans rights, attacked critical race theory, and complained that "abortion is murder" (even opposing it in cases of sexual assault.)

Sounds pretty typical of a MAGAchud.

Anyway .. any news about the shooter ? I've seen videos of some older guy with gray hair being detained .. but now I've also seen claims the shooter is at large.

Right wing pundit Charlie Kirk has been shot and killed while at an outdoor speaking event at Utah State University at around 12:10 pm today. As much as I loath his politics, I think this is a tragic event. But I also can't help but think about a statement he made just 2½ years ago, on April 5, 2023.

"I think it's worth it. I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights."

This is the America he voted for. I'm sure when he made the above statement he thought that he would be supporting the sacrifice of other people's lives for the sake of his 2nd Amendment rights. He never thought, to use the vernacular, that the leopard would eat his face.

ETA: I just noticed the discussion in the Leopards/Face thread. Feel free to move this post there if you like.

Not saying I'd feel bad if he slipped and bumped his head and died, but dancing on his grave after he gets shot during a speaking event seems like a tacit approval of political violence.
Ah, but in this case the victim himself endorsed the practice. He was a willing martyr to the cause of gun rights. It would be rude to minimize his accomplishment.

Its a tragic event and no good will come of this.

As much as I think Kirk was walking garbage, there are a thousand more blowhards ready to step into his place to bloviate hate to the masses. And now Kirk will be made a martyr and this will be used as an excuse to crack down on MAGAs enemies even more than is already happening.

I know the story of most of these types, including Tucker Carlson. I don't see a story here. What turned him in to a conspiracy nut?
" His mother is a mental health counselor, and his father is an architect."

It was 'unfortunately worth it', according to himself. He showed the wind and reaped the whirlwind. I wish he hadn't been shot, but I also won't shed a tear for him. One less hateful MAGAt in the world.

It's evolving. Ten minutes ago CNN reported a suspect was in custody. Three minutes ago they said they'd been released.

One shot from 200 yards away? The shooter knew what they were doing, whoever they are.
