Trump administration blocks Harvard's ability to enroll international students

They were doing that long before he came along....but I'm not at all surprised this is devolving into another Trump-hate thread.
it's what happens when you hear what Trump says and see what he does.
I guess in Cuckoo-Banana-Land, Trump is doing a great job.

No, it's what happens any time politics comes up here. He could help a little old lady across the street and people would spin it negatively. (And yeah conservatives were no better about Biden, Obama, etc) It's just how political discussions are in this country now: extremist and zero objectivity. My bad for even starting the thread, but I was foolishly focused on the issue vs just who was behind it...I'm out; have fun

We're not talking about helping little old ladies cross the street. We're talking about using the presidency to brow beat perceived opponents in a petty revenge scheme. Do you think that is not worthy of criticism? You can't even say it is derailing. t's the topic you chose.

Yes, there were stupid criticisms of Obama and Biden along with valid ones. Conservatives were far worse, though. Birth certificates, being Muslim, tan suits etc. This is not a "both sides" issue.

Again, do you think the specific action that is the topic of this discussion is worthy of criticism?

You literally picked this topic. You even said
Regardless of one's political leanings or thoughts on Harvard, this sounds illegal and just plain whacked IMO.
Precisely how does one interpret that statement as not an objective condemnation of Trump's action in this case?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the courts. In the meantime, I have zero sympathy for Harvard.
Nobody cares how much sympathy you have for Harvard or indeed for Buttfudge Polytechnic. The issue is not with Harvard but with the authoritarian overreach of a government attempting to mould the higher education institutions.

You were someone who was very vocal about “wokeism” on college campuses, and even wrote journal articles on it. Yet it seems to me that you were not being fired, jailed or deported for what you said.

That is now the situation affecting many in higher education. To shrug your shoulders and suggest no sympathy would suggest no principles either.

What laws supercede students and employees' 1st amendment rights?

Dude! You are the one who started a thread about the Trump administration’s “illegal and whacked” (your words, dude!!!!! Your frickin’ words!!!) attempts to browbeat Harvard. You started the thread in the US politics section and now you are complaining that people have some words about Trump!!! Are you doing this because you somehow get pleasure from being upset about what people say online and so you decide to make them say it to you?

Well boo frickin’ hoo snowflake!

Reminds me of a story a co-worker once told me. She grew up in totalitarian* Poland in the 1970s. There was some policy the government had enacted which her father detested. He had finally gotten fed up and said so loudly at work, at a time most Poles knew to keep their mouth shut in public. One of his co-workers reported him and that evening their doorbell rang. It was the political police. They told her father, "It's best you come with us." They took him to a police station where they questioned him for a couple hours. Why was he anti-government? Who was he involved with? Who told him to make anti-government remarks? What was he/they planning? They finally let him go.

Free speech? Speech wasn't free. Speech had consequences.

What's my point? This is where the United States is headed.

* - Totalitarianism is a form of government that seeks to control every aspect of public and private life, often by a single party or leader, with limited individual rights and freedoms.

Every legal commentator I have said says it going to be DOA in court, for no other reason then he is singling out a single school.
So? The Trump regime has shown it cares nothing for any court order / outcome unless it favors them. And has shown to actively persecute judges who disagree with them.
If I were a foreign student in the US I'd get out while I still could.

The real losers in this will be the international students. Many will have really struggled to afford the fees but some will have very big money behind them. I idly wonder if a cohort might band together to sue.

sure, some foreign student will miss out, but there are plenty of other countries offering top level education for far less.

The biggest losers will be US students who will have to pay more, and US companies, the economy and Science and Research.

Trump doesn't care about any of those.

TBH, I'm all for taking away funding from Harvard until it's again a University and not an Investment Fund. There are hundreds of colleges where some money would have a bigger effect than giving it to the one that's already the best.
