General UK politics VIII - The Last Tory

This stuff about being 'asset rich' and 'cash poor' is absolute nonsense. Vehicles can be depreciated at 25% pa plus you can depreciate farming equipment and machinery at a similar rate, as well as claim capital allowance off your profit & loss a/c for vehicles, to save on corporation tax. Thus when it comes to valuing a farm (quite separately from your primary residence, which is often elsewhere and doesn't count as 'farm assets' unless it's for farm use proper). In effect the only asset that is really valuable is the land itself and possible farm houses for the tenant farmers who work your fields, but then Clarkson, Dyson and Farage always knew that. Then there are the claims that the 'average profit' for a farm is 'just £45K pa' but what they haven't told you is that that is the net profit after the salaries and dividends (and Barbour jackets) that farmers pay themselves (likewise as with any business person). In effect, what's left over. Most middle class people would struggle to save £46K per annum, even if it does get reinvested into the farm or ploughed back into other business. Of course these same people absolutely put aside savings to leave the kids, so of course the kids have plenty of dosh to pay the IHT, if they inherit over the threshold.
Indeed over on Twitter I am arguing that owing a six figure sum isn't that much of a problem.

Assuming a widowed parent passing their farm to their kids, it would be at least £3.5M to owe £100k, which can be paid back at 10% pa over 10 years, so £10k per year for £3.5M.

An asset that cannot provide 0.3% return per year is a bad investment.

I would suspect Gulliver is referring to a number of actions of 1 Para in the Six Counties during the Troubles, especially in Ballymurphy and the Bogside.
More specifically I would assume he means Bloody Sunday.
I've always felt that whoever decided to use Para for crowd control should be charged with criminal negligence or something. Para are trained for fast aggressive reaction in situations with short life expectancy. Google "P company" and you might see the attitude they nurture.

Exactly.

Someone getting £3.5m worth of assets for £100k is a hell of a lot better off than the tenant farmer trying to secure a farm of their own.

If the family farm is so important, why wait for death to make arrangements to secure it's future. Pass it to the kids while you're still around. Of course these kids are likely to be in late middle age themselves. Have they just been waiting to inherit or have they been contributing to the family business for decades and deserve to already be major shareholders?

MPs to summon Elon Musk to testify about X’s role in UK summer riots
Commons inquiry into rise of harmful content on social media also expected to call Meta and TikTok executives

MPs are to summon Elon Musk to testify about X’s role in spreading disinformation, in a parliamentary inquiry into the UK riots and the rise of false and harmful AI content, the Guardian has learned.

Senior executives from Meta, which runs Facebook and Instagram, and TikTok are also expected to be called for questioning as part of a Commons science and technology select committee social media inquiry.

The first hearings will take place in the new year

Yup, elsewhere I have said that maybe handing the farm to descendants in their 40s would give them a chance to actually do something with the farm.

Also, don't forget Don't forget David Gilmour who sold his London house for £3.6 million and donated the proceeds to homelessness projects, and more recently auctioned virtually all his guitars to raise £21 million(!) for climate action.

Gilmour has this "a house for houses" idea where rich people with more than one home are encouraged to sell all but one and give the proceeds away to fund the building of lots of smaller homes for people who really needed them.

I won't hold my breath waiting for rich people to adopt the idea.

Looks like not everyone involved in complaining about tax is enamoured of Band Wagon Nige, nor even his fellow travellers Hopkins and Clarkson.

Thinks: if there was no publicity, media coverage, reporting'n'all of this protest, would Clarkson, Hopkins and Farage even have been in the same county as the protesters, let alone each other?

Rees-Mogg on his TV show says

"Of course the BBC backs the Labour Party. It is after all its mouthpiece, much as the China Daily is for the Chinese Communist Party."

So Director General Tim Davie former Tory election candidate, Robbie Gibb former Tory Party director of comms, Deborah Turness Head of BBC News and wife of another Tory Dir of Comms are all staunch Labour Party supporting Communists are they?

The cesspit that is now X is circulating a ridiculous story - no doubt what Farage is alluding to that 'will bring Starmer down' - is that Starmer, when he was a Queens Counsel barrister back in 2003, represented the Southport killer's father and brother in their asylum claim applications, as if state defence barristers for the Queens Bench didn't operate on a taxi-rank basis of who's next to come along, if it is even true.
That's not what the Cab Rank Rule is. It just says that barristers can't turn down cases for which they are appropriately qualified and available:
The Cab Rank Rule obliges a barrister to accept any work in a field in which they profess themselves competent to practise, at a court at which they normally appear and at their usual rates.
https://www.barstandardsboard.org.u...ties/what-bsb-entities-can-and-cannot-do.html

A solicitor can select any barrister they think is appropriate from the whole of the practising bar, it's not a question of "who's next to come along".

And we don't have "state defence barristers" in this country.

Nige has even been excluded from the list of potential Archbishops of Canterbury on the front page of this week's Private Eye.

Is there nowhere the conspiracy doesn't extend to?

To be fair the whole idea of protecting catholic communities from unionist terrorism by stationing army units in the catholic areas and having them point their guns at the residents was a bad idea.

But then again Frank Kitson's only idea was "genocide the natives".

Farage and Hopkins wouldn't be in the same country, they'd be in the US looking to book time to fellate T****y.
