The Tim Walz campaign, and the ******** attacks upon him.

He brought it up when he was running for congress in 2005 and the question of his retired rank was brought up at the time. When he got elected, he boasted about being the member of congress with the highest enlisted rank. He's said it since then and there are recent twitter posts of him saying it. Here's a video montage of him saying it or acknowledging it:

I guess we'll find out. It defiinitely makes the slightest difference to Governor Walz.

When he retired what rank was he? I.e. literally the day before he retired what rank was he?

What rank was he when he retired?
He was a Command Sergeant Major. Then he became a retired Master Sergeant. It's fine if the distinction doesn't matter to you. I think it matters to Governor Walz and I'll bet he knows the difference.

That is very common. Once a Marine always a Marine.

How does that work?

When you leave you are no longer a Marine.

It's stupid.

Once a WEM Always A WEM.

Once a Stoker Always a Stoker.

Once a Corporal Signwriter always a Corporal Signwriter.

You agree he was a Command Sergeant Major?

And you have yet to say why you think it is a big deal.

Yes, per the Public Affairs Office statement from shemp's reference to wikipedia note 54, "he served as a command sergeant major." For 7 months, in fact. Why is this question important to you?

And you have yet to say why you think it is a big deal.
What does 'big deal' mean to you? Why do I want to discuss it? Why do I keep replying? I'm not even sure now, to be honest. Oh well.

Just curious, would that have been false if he was "only" a Master Sergeant?

I'll retract the claim that, "he boasted about being the member of congress with the highest enlisted rank" since I can't find an exact quote, if it exists. However, it's been repeatedly stated about him by journalists and others.

In regards to your question- yes. E9 is the highest enlisted rank within each branch of the US military. E8 is not.

On the other hand, if someone is asking, "what's the highest ranking enlisted person that's served in Congress?" I don't know. I have no idea if any E8s have served in Congress. Governor Walz could very well have been the first. There are alot more E8s around than E9s, though.

'sfunny, I never refer to myself as being <one of my previous jobs>. I might say "I used to be xxx", but never "I am currently xxx"

Must be something to do with soldiering.

Did any of your jobs start like the movie Full Metal Jacket?

He was Command Sergeant Major when he retired. But, by National Guard rules, since he was not CSM for three years he retired at his previous rank. That matters only in terms of pension and military record keeping. It does not change the fact that he attained that rank before retiring.

It doesn't appear to matter to anyone but you and MAGA. It certainly isn't making a difference to the public.

I'm sure the Royal Navy doesn't have any traditions most people would consider daft.

I don't think it matters to him or MAGA either. This is what you do when you got nothing and you're circling the drain. You attempt to materialize controversy out of thin air.

This fake outrage is so pathetic it's laughable. To say this is grabbing at straws is the understatement of a lifetime.

It's not about the accusation - it's about keeping people busy talking about it and forcing people to waste time explaining the issue.
That means they don't talk about Vance doing nothing but false valor.

Calling yourself a Marine after you have left the service is not a tradition of the service. How can it be when it's being done by people who are no longer marines?

Think I will start saying Once a Jack always a Jack.

I don't know about that.

My oldest brother retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant in the US Marines. He is still referred to as "Gunny." And if you ask him, he would say, "once a jar head, always a jar head."

Indeed, try calling "The Halls of Montezuma" the "Marine Corps Hymn" in a Marine's presence, and they will quickly correct you that it is the "Marines' Hymn". Precisely because it is a hymn for all Marines, and not just those currently in the Corps.
