How long to 'bring back the death penalty' do you think?

End of next week?

18 year old probationer police officers get one weekend off a month, which, with National Service, they will need to spend working in the voluntary sector. They are just one of many jobs that do weekend working.

I've just had an election leaflet from my local Tory MP! He must have already had it printed prior to the announcement as 4th July isn't referenced at all. To read it, you'd think we are already living in the sunny uplands and paradise is just within reach.

£2.5bn per year for all 18 year olds is around £3000 per person per year. They are just saying any old **** aren't they?

I see that army recruits in training get 18k a year wages, which I make £12Bn wages plus a 7-fold increase in accommodation.

It's a gift for Labour

I'm sure someone else will have pointed this out, but the National Service policy is lifted from the NF/BNP

I'd be amazed if this barking mad idea ever comes to fruition.
It's scary that they can come up with ludicrous ideas like this and the Rwanda flights, and waste billions of pounds on them. I keep expecting the adults to come back and restore sanity, but there don't seem to be any left, and, scarily, a certain proportion of the population seems to lap it all up.

I don't understand why Labour don't make more of things like this, and the PPE scandal, and so many others (not to mention the biggest waste of money, Brexit); maybe they do and it doesn't get reported.

My father (born in 1941) did national service and had nothing good to say about it.

My dad was born in 1933, and he managed to avoid it: I think because he went to university and became a teacher, though I never got around to asking him. I don't think he actively avoided it, as I seem to recall he was in the OTC or similar at one time. While I think of it, my mum had a fiance who was killed (by friendly fire) in Kenya during the Mau Mau Uprising, and he was presumably on National Service.

Cameron says that through National Service
"Every village, town and city in the UK has something to be proud of and now with National Service every young person will be able to give back to the communities that raised them."

Well your last sentence explains why even though Labour does point out the stupidity of ideas like this it just doesn't get reported.

My father did NS and has often said he thinks it should come back. He was a gunner/signaller in an armoured car with the 1st Kings Dragoon Guards, based in northern Germany near Bergen-Belsen, or what was left of it. Nominally, they were going to be part of the defence of Denmark against Soviet invasion.

He learned about radios, peeling potatoes and for a while he was made wages clerk, skills he never used once he was back in civvy street.

While playing the forum eurovision game I went into my personalised game page and hit play to rank the songs, only to get a party political advert for the Conservatives done in the style of advertising Kier as a doll essentially. It was saying he changes positions all the time, and the three positions it "highlighted" were environmentally conscious, then a remainer, then a Corbynite.

What planet are the people making this ad on? He's never been a Corbynite (for better and/or worse) and the other two are POSITIVES. Why not have a fourth one "economically sound"? Or even just "competent Kier"? I mean if you're going to make an advert for your party that claims that the opposition leader has positive traits liked by the majority of the populace why not go whole hog?

I thought at first (because it was muted) it was a Labour advert extolling the virtues of Kier's green policies and previous remain positioning.

Just like you did, eh, Dave?

And your tax-dodging dad before you?

******* hypocrite!

Yours in contempt,

A retired nurse, brother of another retired nurse, child of physiotherapists, grandchild and great-nephew of teachers, cousin of another ex-nurse, great grandchild and more of coal miners (i.e. don't ******* lecture me about public service!).

Do you think he realises that 18-year-olds have the vote? There are surely more of them who would vote against him on this than 80+ year olds who might vote Tory rather than Reform because of this nonsense.

The planet on which their own party has presided over a disastrous Brexit and our rivers being filled with ****. And has a leader who relaunches his own policies every other week.
