U.S. Border and Immigration

We need to keep the population under control, and having an essentially & functionally (even if not technically) open border is doing the opposite of that.

Democrats talk like they're against me on that, and act accordingly, by leaving the inflow rate so extremely high. Republicans talk like they agree with me but still act like Democrats about it, never doing anything to change the situation.
That seems to confirm that all the talk means nothing beyond stupid posturing. The immigrants just keep on coming...

Also, what do you mean by "keep the population under control"? In what way is it going "out of control"? Perhaps you should go back to what it was in the 1890's...

While the immigrant population has generally been growing, this growth has slowed. Immigrants comprised 13.6 percent of the total U.S. population in 2021, a slight decrease from the 13.7 percent share they comprised in 2019 and short of the record high of 14.8 percent in 1890.

the US has spend a third of a TRILLION dollars on Immigration Enforcement and Border Security in the last 20 years.

Clearly, the issue is not that we don't throw enough resources at the problem, but that it is politically advantageous not to solve the problem.

What if we stopped backing authoritarian dictators and stopped supporting our corporations running roughshod in these countries? That might make life better there and give people less motivation to risk the perilous journey here

NYT paywall story with this in the daily newsletter
Since Donald Trump first ran for president in 2016, the Democratic Party has changed its own approach to immigration. Not long ago, leading Democrats supported immigration enforcement measures like tough border security and deportations. Today, much of the party is uncomfortable doing so.

These changes help explain why the issue has become so vexing for President Biden and congressional Democrats. Illegal immigration has surged during Biden’s presidency, partly because of the party’s new approach: Many migrants have come to believe, reasonably, that they will be able to remain in the U.S. so long as they can reach the border. Many voters are unhappy about the situation, and polls suggest that it is a problem for Biden.

“Believe it or not, there is something that might hurt President Biden’s re-election chances more than inflation,” Greg Ip of The Wall Street Journal recently wrote.

This being a big country, many of the illegals simply think they can get here and then do something without papers. It may be in their plans to apply for assylum, but just working here illegally is preferred to their homelands.

Because that is the way it has always been?

Not exactly. It has for Mexico.

But for Venezuela:
According to the misery index in 2013, Venezuela ranked as the top spot globally with the highest misery index score.[61][62] The International Finance Corporation ranked Venezuela one of the lowest countries for doing business with, ranking it 180 of 185 countries for its Doing Business 2013 report with protecting investors and taxes being its worst rankings.[63][64] In early 2013, the bolívar fuerte was devalued due to growing shortages in Venezuela.

Does not the right bear some responsibility when they keep declaring to border to be open? Do they think those words never leave the US borders?

Was it the right that ended the remain in Mexico policy?

The number of migrants is overwhelming the big cities, to the point where even the Democrats running those cities are complaining:

Their concerns spiraled into Democratic infighting after New York City Mayor Eric Adams said earlier this week that Colorado Gov. Jared Polis planned to send migrants from his state to New York and Chicago, further straining shelters, schools and health services in the cities. On Wednesday, Adams continued to criticize Democratic state leaders for sending to his city.

Although, being Democrats their main complaint is that the feds need to send them more money. No surprise, the response has been basically shut up, there's no immigration crisis and you're going to end up helping Trump.

How many immigrants to the USA arrive NOT via the border with Mexico? What percentage?

The most common reason to deport is an expired visa. The US pays for the flight. Special flight to places like guatemala.

DHS conducted over 1.2 million expulsions, removals and returns in first half of fiscal year 2023.

The China and India deportations are not going to be big numbers:

Mexico is the top origin country of the U.S. immigrant population. In 2018, roughly 11.2 million immigrants living in the U.S. were from there, accounting for 25% of all U.S. immigrants. The next largest origin groups were those from China (6%), India (6%), the Philippines (4%) and El Salvador (3%).

Refugees are flown here and not deported:
Since the creation of the federal Refugee Resettlement Program in 1980, about 3 million refugees have been resettled in the U.S. – more than any other country.

Ukraine and Afghanistan are the big numbers outside our continent.

Thank you.

So for all these 11 million Mexican immigrants, how many did NOT come through legal means?

Isn't acknowledging the past sins of this country some woke CRT socialist anti-American anti-Christian propaganda?

The far-right want a completely open border while demonising anybody who crosses it. Where else are they going to find their slave labour and hold onto them until starvation?

The local congress critter running for reelection is advertising his qualities on a billboard, including "Voted for Border Security"

I'm tempted to call his office and ask, what exactly has he voted for to help with border security?
