I guess there are 2 questions:All former Presidents have lifetime Secret Service protection. I see no location limits on this protection. They are bound by Federal law to protect ex-Presidents from harm, until they are releived of such duty by the ex-President. Why does it bother you that he is entitled to SS protection even in prison? All I care about is that he is punished for his crimes, either with prison or house arrest.
- Does it HAVE to be the secret service that protects a president. I know there is a law that mandates protection, but can other branches of the government (e.g. the military, or capitol police, or in this case prison guards) also be tasked with the protection?
- Is there a minimum "service level" for protection? When a president/ex president is roaming about in public, I assume the number of agents varies according to risk level. If he is stuck in jail, he is pretty much safe from threats (given the fact that prison is itself a controlled environment.) Its possible that his secret service "protection" could consist of a monthly visit by a junior agent. In other words something that gives a sort of "symbolic" protection but doesn't really serve a practical purpose.
