In August 2021, South Madison adopted a new policy and practice regarding the use of names and pronouns for students that do not correspond with their sex. Prior to this new policy, South Madison employees would notify a student’s parents and seek their consent before using cross-gender names or pronouns for the student. According to the new policy, South Madison required counselors like Mrs. McCordto use a form called a “Gender Support Plan” to document whenever the school decided to begin using cross-gender names or pronouns for a student and whether the school would notify a student’s parents. The new policy did not require parental consent, or even parental notification, to change a student’s name and pronouns, although such action is part of the psychotherapeutic intervention sometimes called “social transition.”

According to the website of the University of Colorado at Boulder, Center for Inclusion and Social Change's website, the intentional use of the "wrong" gender pronoun to identify someone can be seen not only as an act of oppression, but an act of violence.

I'm not sure how anyone came to the conclusion that words can be an act of violence, but this is very dangerous, as acts of violence are often grounds to be expelled from college and indeed arrested and charged with the crime. Worse, one is legally allowed to use physical force to defend themselves against acts of violence. Is that what we are getting at here? Call somebody a he instead of a she, and the target of the wrong pronoun can hit the person in self-defense??

This really is an attack on speech in a way that is totally out of control. Speech that makes people offended or uncomfortable may not be right, but it is certainly not an act of violence.

This needs to stop.

Be shameful if someone uses this new rule to justify attacking someone with violence, because they were misgendered. Hopefully this policy will be removed quick.
 
Slow news day for the conservative outrage machine? You know it's bad when they're having to resort to looking around obscure college campus policy pages for something to get upset about.

It's conservatives. The only right they ever care about is the right to be horrible to other people.

I'd point out that a certain someone didn't start one thread about DeSantis banning books or any of the many, many, many times Republicans attacked free speech but the second it was "Hey maybe don't say hurtful things for no reason" it turned into "OH MY GOD I JUST REMEMBERED HOW MUCH I LOVE FREE SPEEECH!" but apparently we're not allowed to notice hypocrisy on this board anymore.

Also I thought violence was how people got their way? Isn't that what gun owners do?

What are your thoughts on the issue? Is misgendering someone an act of "oppression" and "violence"?

Agreed, using violence against someone because they misgender you, is not acceptable and clearly a crime.

Calling the misuse of pronouns "violence", is a step towards Socialism and Fascism. Pardon the hyperbole.
 
The OP article says that misgendering someone can be an act of violence. As in, sometimes and based on intent. It says this once, and is not exactly the thrust of the article.

If you repeatedly call a guy "she" to insult their masculinity, or "they" to emasculate him, then yeah, you are picking a fight and being aggressive. "Violent" might be too strong a word, but it's in the right ballpark.

Imma go ahead and be old, and say gender is basically synonymous with sex, and this whole "yeah but I totally feel like an ocelot" is getting ridiculous. If you are legit trans, fine, but the horse **** about making up new terms to satisfy distinctions without a difference is getting way out of the reasonable spectrum.

Verbal bullying is of course terrible, but it is not an act of violence.

Harrassment? If its repeated and intended to cause harm Yes.

Sorry but I consider the disgusting trend in the USA against speech as a very slippery slope.

Florida, Colorado, NYC, wherever. When we criminalize speech, we go down a dark road.

No, it's not in the right ballpark. The divide between insults and actual violence isn't some razor thin margin, it's a vast gaping chasm. Conflating the two is a way to excuse actual violence.

Actual violence is a crime. Insults are protected speech, at least in the US. There's not a single liberal poster here who doesn't want to be permitted to insult the targets of their derision. Any arguments about why their insults should be permitted but others forbidden are just special pleading.

No, the concept of "fighting words" does not fly in the USA. You cannot punch someone out for insulting your mamma, or calling you a fairy.

However repeated use of such terms can be considered criminal harrassment. But under no circumstances are you or should you be allowed to use physical force to defend yourself against mere words.

Unless its "I am going to shoot you in 3 seconds".

It absolutely exists, and provocation is a legal standard for interpreting motivations, and everything from what crime is committed (if any) and can mitigate sentencing down to nil. It's not a blanket defense or excuse, but you are mistaken if you think verbal provocation is not legally recognized.
 
lol it's a webpage written by students explaining pronouns. scary, but it is protected by free speech. i'm sure you have a lot of bud light cans and target discount isle merch to shoot before you start having to worry about shooting this school's merch
