It is certainly possible that he is a white supremacist who happened to go on a shooting rampage for unrelated reasons, rather than a white supremacist who went on a shooting rampage for related reasons. The distinction, obviously, is extremely important to some people here.

It would be more important to me if establishing his alleged motive was the chief factor in determining whether it was accurate to call him a white supremacist or not, as it is in the cases of many white supremacists who have engaged in mass shootings of strangers at public venues; but since it's clear and verifiable that he was a neo-Nazi regardless of the specific motive for the shooting, I frankly care a lot less about things like firmly nailing the motive down. It's not like he is owed the benefit of any doubt.

see the thing is, we just don't know. did he spend most of his time online on weird russian forums complaining about asians? yes. did he cover himself in gigantic nazi tattoos? yes. did he shoot a bunch of asians he didn't know?
yes. did the holocaust happen? we don't know, we just can't figure it out.

Plus the core motive isn't completely relevant.

Even if he's killing people to impress Jodie Foster he's still selecting victims consistent with his racist ideologies.

Folk if you want to discuss the killers “motivation” etc. please start a new thread to do so.

It's hardly the first red flag.

Oh, I 1000% agree, but this goes beyond waving a red flag. He is now openly saying he doe snot give a crap about his shareholders.
I don't know what the hell Musk is after iwht all this..he might not know himsef...but is sure as hell is not money.

That the Holocaust happened has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt.

Isn't it obvious?

Musk is tired of white supremacists being marginalized and shouted down and pushed to obscure corners of the internet. He senses momentum toward the mainstreaming of their views and wants to help with that, and owning Twitter lets him do that by lending a platform and elevating their voices.

The more intelligent white supremacists all understand that armed neo-Nazis going and committing mass murders in public spaces is inconvenient to the mainstreaming effort, so they try to engage in damage control by minimalizing events and attacking information sources when something like this happens. Musk is platforming that effort by lending what he sees as his personal credibility to the claim that the shooter wasn't a white supremacist and that fact was really just made up as a "psyop" or whatever.

Business genius at it again, sending a shot across the bow for any organization that is using Twitter API (and probably driving traffic to the site) that maybe they should stop doing so.

Microsoft's response was a clear statement of a company who knows how much their business is worth to twitter and willing to pull the plug on a second's notice.

From Pew Research:

"A majority of Americans who have used Twitter in the past year report taking a break from the platform during that time, and a quarter say they are not likely to use it a year from now, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted about five months after billionaire Elon Musk acquired the site."

"There are differences by gender within both political parties on this question. Among current or recent Twitter users, Republican men stand out as the most likely to say they will use the platform a year from now (51%), compared with Republican women (35%) and with both Democratic men (42%) and women (29%)."

Hmmm…. Are there similar polls from last year or the year before? I wonder how the figures compare. I don’t think these figures are useful at all unless they can be compared to pre-Musk days. I would have expected that the majority of people who use social media or any particular app feel as though they really should take a break and use social media less. It’s meaningless unless you see actual use drop off.

Fair point. I had a look and found this poll from November 2021, but it's not the same questions.

https://www.pewresearch.org/interne...viors-and-attitudes-of-u-s-adults-on-twitter/

"Democrats and Republicans on Twitter differ in their views of the major problems on the site and its overall impact on democracy. Nearly identical shares of Twitter users say the site is mostly good (37%) or mostly bad (38%) for American democracy, with 24% saying it has no impact either way. But Republican Twitter users (including Republican-leaning independents) are roughly twice as likely as Democrats and Democratic leaners to say the site is bad for American democracy (60% vs. 28%). Conversely, roughly half of Democrats who use the site say it is good for American democracy – just 17% of Republican users say the same."

CLAIM: An image shows an explosion near the Pentagon.

THE FACTS: Police and fire officials in Arlington, Virginia, say the image is not real and there was no incident at the U.S. Department of Defense headquarters across the Potomac from the nation’s capital.

Despite this, the image and claim was spread by outlets including RT, a Russian government-backed media company formerly known as Russia Today. It was also widely shared in investment circles, including an account bearing Twitter’s signature blue verification check mark that falsely suggested it was associated with Bloomberg News.

Fake photo sent a shiver through the stock market before being denounced. Twitter looks suspicious to me.

A fake photo posted by "verified" accounts.

Who could have seen this coming, other than everyone.

I wonder if Elon Musk is going to have the genius idea of setting up some kind of moderation of the platform to prevent disinformation hijacking the algorithm and spreading like wild fire. You know, like the types of things that no one has ever had to wrestle with before.
