The DeSantis gambit

[snip]

FWIW DeSantis wanting government to run the improvement zone and be the provider of services to Disney is Socialist in nature, and Socialist in the worst way. The problem with government directly providing goods and services is that government failures can often make the services less efficient. In most cases this is accidental, but lets face it, providing more expensive less efficient services to Disney is the whole point.

Disney can afford it. If they cover the additional costs by raising their prices it probably won't hurt their custom all that much. And they've got the bankroll to do it very slowly so it isn't as noticeable.

Thing is, they aren't the only ones in the district, and everyone else may not have the same advantages.

It is likely that most of the ones to feel the pain will be people and businesses other than Disney. DeSantis constituents, IOW.

Not that he would care about that.

The core concept of Socialism is social ownership rather than private ownership of the means of production. A member run co-op would be socialist, so would a government run factory. Funding social services on the other hand isn't Socialist unless the government provides the service directly rather than paying a private company to do it.

Social security isn't really a service, Medicare doesn't provide medical services directly so neither of these is truly socialist in nature. Police and military services, on the other hand are provided directly by the government instead of being contracted out to private mercenaries, so i think you could make a case for them being Socialist.

I know you know there's a little more to "socialism" than just production. There is also distribution and exchange, and arguably mutual defence.

From Simple Wikipedia, examples relevant to RCID and DeSantis:
What is socialism examples?
Public infrastructure—bridges, roads, electricity, water and sewer systems, and other government infrastructure—is considered socialist. It is usually owned and operated by the government and paid for by a mix of taxation and user fees.

We have it on very good authority* that lie detector tests are too unreliable, and people shouldn't take them.

(* Justice Clarence Thomas)

Of course that may only apply to Supreme Court Justice candidates, and not the hoi polloi.

James Randi, founder of this forum, very much agreed with that. Thomas's stopped clock moment, perhaps.

In reality, polygraphs are not reliable. Neither is 'body language analysis".

I think we're seeing the rise of a strange hybrid. "Sheep" that have enough influence to gain power and promote their point of view, but also conditioned to deflect or reject information that calls it into question. Willful ignorance allowing them to become the wolves while they could pass a lie detector test, if such a thing was reliable, about how sincere they are.

I think it they believe the nonsense they're spouting, they are more sheep than they would like to believe. The one with the bell is still a sheep.*

But if you'd rather keep it simple, we can go with Brecht, and remark that those who do not know the truth are fools, while those who know it but call it a lie are criminals. That works all right too.

Or to paraphrase an old saying also pertinent to Santis, "you can send an ass to college but he won't come back a horse."

Yes, I know and agree.

But I will be unsurprised if Thomas finds some way to weasel out of that if a case comes before him which requires a more 'conservative' viewpoint.

No surprise, Rebekah was lying.

The trouble for Jones is that her 13-year-old son sent some disturbing messages to his friends via Snapchat, including ones saying, “I want to shoot up the school” and “it’s been like 3-4 weeks since I got on my new….antidepressants and they aren’t working but they’re suppose to by now so I have no hope in getting better so why not kill the losers at school.”

If De Santis passes legislation specicially targeting Disney by name, it will be shot dowin in court so fast it will make you head spin. CLear violation of severa basic legal concepts.

NO idea where to put this, soo here it is. The 'Don't Say Period' bill passed into Legislation, because only 6th graders and older have periods?

My sister was in 4th (10 years old) grade when she got her first period.

These bills reflect the Victorian mindset of these right-wingers. Fascinated and obsessed with sex but scared crapless by it at the same time.

I would love to see some kind of malicious compliance on a law like that. Imagine a girl gets her period in 4th or 5th grade, expresses concern, as is likely, and the teacher announces (as one must presume they can) "I'm sorry, but state law forbids me to tell you what is happening" and then calls the office of the local congressman demanding that they explain it, since she is forbidden.

"Maybe we'll build a competing theme park next to Disney World. Or a prison."

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday threatened to build a prison or a competing theme park near the Magic Kingdom or raise taxes on Walt Disney World to retaliate against the company for resisting a state takeover of its special taxing district.

“Come to think of it now, people are like, ‘well, what should we do with this land?’” DeSantis said. “Maybe create a state park. Maybe try to do more amusement parks. Someone even said like, maybe you need another state prison. I mean, who knows? I mean, I just think that the possibilities are endless.”

"I'll build my own park. With blackjack. And hookers."

Yeah, uh, Ronnie? I don't think the corrupt toadies and patronage employees you put in place could build an outhouse, let alone a competing theme park.

Hey Ron! You DO know that whoever told you this was trolling you, right? And you it picked up and ran with it...right? :D

So, Florida is such a crime infested hell hole during Meatball Ron's tenure that they need another prison?
