Why not? It's not as though he was in some publicly accessible location in Western Europe in broad daylight, where hundreds of free people with cameras of all kinds were allowed to take as many pictures as they like from as many angles as they can manage.

Staging a photo op with a lookalike and a handpicked crowd and photographers, somewhere in the occupied regions of Eastern Ukraine, with Moscow security forces able to control literally every aspect of the appearance, seems like it would be entirely on brand, and also much safer for Putin than actually leaving his undisclosed location.

The issue is you can tell. If you have series of detailed photos, every forensic expert (or let's say anyone who can draw a person, where I include myself) will tell you if it's the original or not. Nobody has perfect double. You can fix few things with surgery, but not everything. Not every hair. Not every crease.
But usually you use doubles where nobody can take a good look. Like when you're leaving in a car.
Like the recent Putin's visit to Mariupol. All experts said it was clearly him, we got too good look. The people around were actors, sure. There was tight security, even if it looks like there was none. But it was him.

Despicable but not suprising. I'm currently reading Antony Beevors book Stalingrad and the way Stalin cracked down on his critics and critics of the army is very resembling of Russia 2023. I long for the day Putin is gone but I fear for whats to come. Because nothing good will be replacing this, right? Russia is forever doomed.

The White House has sharply criticised Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for accusing the United States of "encouraging" the war in Ukraine.

Lula said after a visit to China at the weekend that the US needed to start talking about peace in Ukraine.

As far as I've heard, yeah, there certainly is. Much of it with firm foundations and frequently questionable building materials. Europe and the US have a lot of sins to account for, both past and present, though not solely sins. Republican politicians' penchant for betraying our allies and effectively preaching about how they despise huge portions of the world certainly doesn't help, either. I suspect that similar applies to their far right counterparts in Europe, as well, but I won't pretend to be particularly well versed in non-US politics.

There is a strong anti-USA sentiment in South America that makes (mostly) the left support Russia and China, based on the philosophy of "the ennemies of my enemy …".

The same applies to the support so many "non aligned" countries in Africa give to Russia and China, never mind the fact that those two countries are pillaging the continent at a scale that makes the worse of the former colonial powers rank amateurs .

Though of course cash-rich China is also making a lot of friends in non-aligned nations with its "Belt and Road Initiative", building infrastructure rather like the US did with the Marshall Plan 70+ years ago. Of course a lot of that infrastructure is the transport links needed for those countries to extract their raw materials and ship them to China, but we'd probably be more reluctant to call that "pillaging" if it was our own country rather than China which was doing it.
