Cont: The Biden Presidency (3)

I think Sanders is too old to run. But in 2016 he really did have a strong appeal to the working class. Apparently around 12% of the voters who supported him in the primaries voted for Trump in the general, and a lot more just stayed home. I think a Democrat could appeal effectively to the working class in 2024, even among the Trumpers.

Oh crap, now you've done it! The beacon has been lit! Bernie Bros have been shown to have helped Trump win, we must man the ramparts!

Ones willing to step out of line by challenging an establishment backed incumbent in the primary?

If Biden runs, it would be lethal to the party for someone to run against him. Jimmy Carter was severely weakened by Ted Kennedy's primary challenge in 1980, and it was one (of several) factors that put Reagan in the White House. And I can't recall an incumbent being challenged since then. Biden might still choose not to run. I suspect Jill will have a lot to say about it. But if he runs, the party will have to stand behind him or lose for sure.

What? My point was just that Sanders appealed to a part of the electorate that might not be seen as supporting a "left-wing radical," and that Clinton pretty much wrote off.

What have you been listening to in order to hear that?

Well, actually, Biden has been pretty successful. Inflation is falling, the covid emergency is ending, unemployment is at historic lows, he's unified Europe to support Ukraine, and he's gotten several major pieces of legislation through a Senate with 50 Democratic votes. Except for Manchin and Sinema, he might have done much more. If he runs on his record against Trump's, that could be enough. But the Repubs certainly won't let him do that.

Sanders was seen as a left wing radical while they were supporting him, though.

But I was just having fun with the way far left/progressive posters have tended to come out of the woodwork if anyone points out that Sanders supporters were one of the factors that helped Trump win.

NO dedicated Trumper will ever vote for the Dem candidate no matter what so that is not the demographic the Dems should even bother with. Total waste of time. Who we need is someone Independents and Republicans dissatisfied with Trump would rather vote for than Trump. And that isn't going to be someone like Bernie Sanders or a far-left candidate.

If Trump runs, yes. If Trump isn't running there will a small amount but enough working class populists up for grabs to affect the rustbelt states (Ohio/PA/Michigan/Wisconsin) that have been so critical in recent history.

Biden could even do it. He just has to be more that guy who visits factory floors and gets into animated arguments about policy. Maybe rant about how great unions are and invent a steelworker great-uncle who died in some labor unrest and how that effected him. Coyly threaten to kick someone's ass. Promise to bring back the steel mills and other factory jobs.

I mean, the last one is out there for the taking. Covid was a sort of warning shot about relying too much on globalization. The "bring manufacturing back home" issue would be golden in that demo. Both as to the prospect of jobs but also because of the dark truth that it would appeal to cultural nativism.

That Biden has had a successful first term isn’t a matter of opinion. He has. Full stop.

Of course they were. It's hard to come up with something at all relevant that wasn't a factor in a race that close. Comey's shenanigans, weather, who knows.

The argument isn't that some Sanders voters didn't vote for Trump. It's that it is weird to somehow blame Sanders because he attracted people who wouldn't otherwise vote Democrat. Which is in the end what this is.

You know, like how it would be Very Smart to nominate someone to appeal to moderate Republicans and independents who wouldn't otherwise vote for a Democrat?

(There is also that claiming that these Bernie voters not voting for Clinton was dispositive is essentially claiming that Bernie would have won by attracting Trump voters)

I honestly have no idea how low expectations would have to be to claim his success transcends opinion into objective fact.

1/ What was the state of the nation on Jan. 20, 2021?

2/ What is the state today?

3/ Which is better?

Well, sure.

Why argue with success. I keep hearing that Joe Biden is one of the most successful Presidents in history and since everything is going so well it makes sense to put all of the eggs in that basket.

Democrats really need to stop letting the GOP lead them around by the nose pushing the 'Biden is too old' narrative.

If you have specific, concrete things you think make him too old, let's hear them. Just saying the numbers (age) are not in his favor because of the laws of averages runs the risk of a self-fulfilling prophesy.

He's had a couple senior moments. So what? Hell Trump has had a lot more than Biden has. How about pushing that narrative.

Biden has been doing a fairly decent job for his age. I think his decades of experience are behind that. Some people get old in their 70s; but some don't get old well into their 90s.

You can bet Faux News, etc is going to be pushing the narrative Biden's senior moments and falling up the airplane stairs are indicative of senility. Want to know what's indicative of senility? Not knowing you have TP hanging off your shoe going up airplane stairs, not being able to close an umbrella, having to have someone hold your hand as you walk down a low-sloping ramp, and saying you knew Diamond but you didn't know Silk at Diamond's funeral.

His continual berating of Clinton and her Goldman Sachs speech definitely took Clinton votes away. She handled it poorly and there were half a dozen things that resulted in her 6 million+ vote lead being wiped out by the EC that cannot be ignored. But Sanders' attacks didn't help.

Back to Biden, watch that narrative people are pushing who think Biden is too old. Look at how stupid Pence looks running up to the podium trying to look young and energetic. He looks like an idiot.

I don't disagree at all that he's done a pretty good job, especially considering the position the GOP has taken. My question was in regards to the claim that "I keep hearing that Joe Biden is one of the most successful Presidents in history and since everything is going so well "

I think that's a bit hyperbolic. Yes, inflation has come down but it's still painfully high compared to the 9 years preceding 2021:

If Biden is the candidate, I'll vote for him because I'll never vote for Trump or DeSantis. But I still think he's too old. And yes, stating numbers is very relevant because age is not "just a number". I don't care how mentally 'with it' someone is at 85-86; the fact is that their body is OLD and being POTUS is both mentally and physically demanding. It's time to find a younger candidate.

Well d'uh! We had 2 years of COVID where all sorts of money was poured into the economy to get us through all the mess. Of course that was going to result in inflation.

Biden isn't responsible for doing the right things. But some of those PPP loans and government contracts need to be investigated. Trump gave his cronies millions through government contracts and loans.

I asked for specifics. I see an answer of averages.

Should I list all the people in their 80s and 90s that were not senile or weak?

Ruth Bader Ginsberg
Betty White
Nancy Pelosi

I'll hunt a few more names up after I feed the dog. :D

We don't have inflation because of Covid. We have inflation because of trying mitigate the economic impact of Covid containment policies that shut down a broad swath of economic activity for extended periods of time, and which have probably made permanent changes to some parts of our economy that we weren't prepared for and still haven't fully acknowledged - let alone addressed.

Did I say Biden was responsible for the high inflation? I don't believe I did. But the fact is that a great amount of people believe he is because they are ignorant. Trying to tell them otherwise goes in one ear and out the other and all they know is that their rent or mortgage payments have skyrocketed and that they can't put food on the table.

....

The Notorious RBG might not be a good example. She had multiple bouts with cancer, and was increasingly frail in her final years. And writing SC opinions is certainly not as demanding as serving as President. Of course, her decision not to resign with a Democrat in the White House had long-term consequences on all of us.

Better examples might be some of the people sitting in the Senate -- Feinstein, Grassley etc. -- long past their expiration date.
