Merged Musk buys Twitter!/ Elon Musk puts Twitter deal on hold....

...I saw an opinion article on CNN or CBS that talked about the need for a non-profit social media platform. Is that possible/feasible?...

Cynical answer: [twitter] hasn’t booked an annual profit since 2019, and posted a loss in eight years of the past decade. Not making a profit makes it a non-profit, right?

Less snarky: Mastodon and Counter Social both run on open source software, are free to use, and are ad-free (these are the only non-traditional ones I know anything about).

So elon has an idea of how not to sink Twatter into total irrelevance? But it's going to hurt his pride to step back.

Musk has put up a new poll asking if he should step down as head of Twitter.

11 hours left to vote.

He says he will abide by the results of the poll.

We got to the peak of Mt. Stupid, but only then did we realize there was a taller, even stupider mountain in the distance.

I was actually conflicted on how to vote for this. The train wreck has been entertaining. However, I'm getting really sick of the impotent authoritarians acting like Elon is the free speech savior, so his resignation will a much-needed wakeup call for them, which is also entertaining, and a lot better for humanity in the long run.

Twitter won't go down easily, there are tons of users who don't care about all this drama at all .. and especially businesses who built audience over the years won't want to move. As long as Twitter more or less works, it will be fine.

Again, that's assuming what "stepping down as a head of Twitter" actually means. I actually don't have a slightest idea ..

I predicted that the no-linking-other-socials policy would be dead by Christmas. Turns out, it's dead by dinner time. The Twitter Support tweets initiating the policy are now deleted. The support page with more details is now deleted. It's dead.

The new CEO will be a guy name Melon Eusk who looks like Elon with a mustache.

If I had to guess it would be another name and face heading the day to day operation. Making sure everything from security to moderation is relatively stable.
A sort of shock absorber to elon making knee jerk radical changes and banning/unbanning anything that offended him for a split second.

The twitter user is the product. Driving them off for erratic behavior reduces it's value to potential advertising.
Also the ever profitable sales of data.
Making it a paid subscription, adding features and all will not make it more appealing to the average person.

If there is any hope of saving it another has to head it.

Well, folks, I didn't get through the firefight unscathed. Somebody reported one of my tweets and I am officially a casualty of war. I'm a frontline reporter that got caught in the crossfire, except I was firing a few shots of my own, which means that this analogy sucks. Forget I said anything.

Note that this is me defending Elon's right to ban reporters from his site, just that I'm saying it in a not-nice way. "Don't make fun of Elmo" is the unwritten rule on the site.

Your tweet didn’t actually break the stated rule.

If anyone believes that the poll is fair and/or that Musk will abide by the results, I have a bridge to sell you.

There is the possibility that he'll use it as a way out, though. At last check he was personally feeling the pressure long ago, and it's likely to only have gotten worse and worse. Him cutting and running and just leaving the mess he made to others to try to clean up would be quite... human behavior.

Looks pretty legit to me - 15 million votes with 2 hours to go and "Piss off" leading 53-47%.

It got me back to Twitter, and I certainly voted yes, although I hope in some way that he stays, because someone else might return it to better financial shape, while Elmo himself is running into the ground faster than Andreas Lubitz.

In good-old Soviet Russia, such a vote would have been to figure out who to shoot 10s after the poll closes.
I have no doubt that every "no" vote gets an internal Black Mark next to their account.

More importantly, Snoop Dogg started a poll asking if he should run Twitter.

700k votes, overwhelmingly say "Hell yeah!"

Gets my vote. At least there'd be some humour there with the Dogg in charge.
