If de Santis wants to become president at some stage, no. His choices for that office is decisively beat Trump in the primaries and hope the republican election stealing machine is enough to install him or wait to 2028. Trumpism was soundly rejected at the ballot box this election cycle and Trump continues to be a reviled figure. There’s no realistic scenario that puts him back in office. The only result of him running again will be the further immolation of the Republican Party, which will be delightful to watch.

I don't think Democrats are happy about the Timing - Trump announcing now means that he's old news by the time of the Nomination and probably a pushover for a DeSantis type.
And being able to ditch Trump for 2024 will allow all the never-Trumpers to vote Red again.

Given how badly the party has destroyed election integrity in the states it controls, if he won the nomiation by a margin, he'll be installed as president again, no matter how badly he's beaten tin the election.

Election deniers running for Secretary of State in key swing swing states all lost their elections. Every single one of them. They will have no more control over a federal election than they did in 2020.

100% agree. We should remain vigilant. But we did it three elections in a row, and we can do it again.
