Thanks for the reference. I'll turn in my UK passport now (though I have to admit it has been expired for sometime).

I did not recognize the quote and it is still a horrible slam against those gentle creatures. Surely they could do a better job?

:w2:

It's a myth anyway.

Who is this slandering donkeys?

Donkeys are smart, loving, loyal, sensible, grounded creatures. The current rulers of the UK are not.

I think it comes from a description of the British Army in World War One..."Lions Led By Donkeys". Brave soldiers who lives werh thrown away by incompetent generals.

A quote made up by Alan Clark for his 'history' of WWI, and designed to fit in with the false narrative of the war that abounds in popular culture.

I think it’s more accurate to say that Clark invented an attribution for the phrase in relation to WW1.
The phrase wasn’t new.

There was a similar comment supposedly made during the Crimean war, but it seems shaky and doesn't change Clark's deliberate lying, which was par for the course in his career in politics. He was basically BoJo without that teflon coating.

If you think 'The Donkeys' is bad try reading his 'Barbarossa'

NI Protocol: Grace periods should be permanent, says Lords committee

The committee says there is "widespread support for the continuation of the various grace periods and derogations, amidst warnings of the serious economic impact should they come to an end without being replaced".

It adds that the EU proposals for reforms of the protocol "appear to be based on the assumption that the grace periods will come to an end, amplified by its decision to continue the infringement procedure against the UK in relation to the grace periods begun in March 2021".

It urges both sides "agree to the permanent continuation of the grace periods and derogations".

Saying the workarounds should continue until replaced by something permanent sounds like a sensible idea. So obviously that won't happen.

Rather reminiscent of "We will negotiate the terms of a new deal before we start the legal process of leaving" and how long that promise lasted.

.
Except the work arounds are not work arounds, they are the UK refusing to control the border, Something they promised to do in order to prevent massive disruption and a challenge to peace in Ireland by putting the land border back in. It is all very well if the UK says we don't give a **** about controlling our borders (ironic as that is) but it means the EU border us not being controlled and that is not acceptable.

The UK's Brexit losses are 178 times the Brexit gains.

UK Brexit losses are more than 178 times bigger than any gains from Boris Johnson’s new trade deals, according to the government’s own figures.

The tiny economic boost – amounting to just 0.01 to 0.02 per cent of GDP, and less than 50p per person a year – is dwarfed by the economic hit from leaving the EU, which the government estimates at 4 per cent of GDP over the same period.

So much winning.....

Raw sewage in our seas and rivers - another Brexit gift. The government voted against measures to restrict dumping of sewage in our waters because there is a shortage of the needed chemicals due to a shortage of HGV drivers.

I saw a wry cartoon where the water companies were complaining that the drought meant that there were no rivers to pump the sewage into ;)
