Merged Trump/DeSantis 2024 /DeSantis for President

The [President] Ron DeSantis Thread

Trump has one, despite not having been president for a couple of years, so DeSantis, USA's next president, should have his own thread.

I wonder if the Republicans are quietly playing bait-and-switch with Trump and DeSantis, leaving Trump to take the negative press while DeSantis institutes an agenda in Florida that is every Republican's wet dream: anti-gay, anti-trans, pro-gun, pro-white...

The smart money has been coming for DeSantis for some time, with bookies having gone from Trump being a prohibitive favourite, to now, where DeSantis is at $4 to Trump's $2-50. Guardian has sensed the mood and is touting him as the next candidate, while his fundraising of $100M to win a governor's race he'd win without spending a dollar is a good guide as to his grassroots popularity.

Seems like a nice bloke, with a good sense of humour.

It'll be the end of satirists when he gets to the White House.

I've been seeing some of the worst people say Ron > Don.

I don't think Trump will win re-election, but it's easy for front-runners to flame out on that primary stage. Jeb, a seasoned politician from Florida, burnt through $100m like an NBA draft pick. Lil Marco Rubio was also favored by the establishment, but reduced to participating in a photo-op where he hugged Ivanka like a small child. It only could have been more awkward if he also tried to drink water. DeSantis has been adept at playing a buffoon, but he might be exposed when he stands next to the real deal.

One problem for Republicans is that they fully know Trump will attempt to kamikaze anyone else who gets the nomination (absolute morons are incredibly good at playing Chicken). The GOPe and traditional Trump critics will be united in calling the Orange Menace a man-baby who whines about "stolen" elections, which will alienate some of the red hats. The leadership is praying for cholesterol to do its thing.

DeSantis is only 43 years old, so he could wait for 2028. Everybody in politics desperately wants to be president, and DeSantis surely feels like this is his time to strike. All of the superficial uncertainty makes the predictable plunge into idiocracy a little more dramatic and interesting.

Here we go again with the "boy who cried wolf," bit. Liberals spend the last few decades painting every Republican (including McCain and Romney) as the reincarnation of Hitler, so that when somebody came along that they claim they really thought was Hitler, they had no credibility left except with their own side.

Politics 101: You can only run as "not those guys" when you are the party out of power, because the "not those guys" always vote against the party in power. 2024 will be a referendum on Biden's four years not on DeSantis' years in Florida.

DeSantis will lose because he is "not that guy", i.e. Biden. He's also "not that guy", i.e. Trump. That's his platform - being NOT(BIDEN) and NOT(TRUMP).

There is already a DeSantis thread...

You're welcome to ask for it to be merged - I'll blame the terrible search function. The only one I saw about him and covid, which isn't relevant.

I think the primaries will be the uphill battle - no matter how much the RNC likes him, the despicables love the mango.

What are you talking about? Someone is going to be the Republican candidate.

Liberals spend the last few decades painting every Republican (including McCain and Romney) as the reincarnation of Hitler, so that when somebody came along that they claim they really thought was Hitler, they had no credibility left except with their own side.

Quite the nicest non sequitur I've seen this month.

I'm neither a liberal nor calling DeSantis Hitler.

But thanks for showing your colours.

If you are the party out of power you can always run as "We're not those guys." Wasn't that Joe Biden's whole campaign (not knocking it, it was well-designed)?

I know, I know, you only said he was "anti-gay, anti-trans, pro-guns, pro-white..."

How on earth could I have gotten Hitler out of that? You need to work harder, the Hitler analogy is tenuous, as you have noted.

All of which are facts demonstrated by the bloke himself.

How on earth could I have gotten Hitler out of that?

I can only presume it's some flaw in your cognitive abilities, because there's nothing about DeSantis that makes him like Hitler, and nothing I posted suggests it.

If you knew any actual history, instead of parroting boring Godwins, you'd know that Hitler wasn't the driver of gay persecution.

.

Wow, the lack of self-awareness is staggering.

So we are to stipulate those in advance?

So you think Hitler was much better than DeSantis on the subject of gays?

What are the odds that the Republican Party will split into two parties - the ultra-right-wing and the right wing?

Can't be easy for some of them deciding whether to go left a little or double down after Trump.

I don't see any other DeSantis threads, so I'll post it here. Apparently DeSantis has come out in opposition to the current fad among liberals of taking their children to transgender strip shows? He might even sign a law making it illegal?

Close to zero IMO. The right is very good at voting for their candidate.

It would be FAR safer than taking them to church and putting them in the care of the clergy.

But we digress...

I'm Warp12, and I approve this message.

I think that over time the effects of "Trump poisoning" may wear off. It could take years, though. The first step is sinking him for 2024, which I feel is an almost safe bet to happen.

Trump is not an aberration, but a natural result of Republican politics since Clinton; he is just the present day Gingrich.

Odds=zero. Either faction by itself is not a force to be reckoned with. Since the Rise of the Stupid, they now see themselves as a legitimate demographic. They won't go back under their rocks. So now the Republicans have to kowtow to them to keep their votes. Split the ticket internally, and the Rs are crippled. If they faction off into Conservatives and Stupids, the Democrats win uncontested. Controlling Republicans won't let that happen. They got a taste with the Tea Party movement.
