Cont: Australian Politics - The Morrison Period Part II

Morrison's star risen a little?

I see the bookies have tightened the Libs up, down to $3.75.

Ah, a few Millennials who think his "use super as a deposit for a home'' is attractive. And possibly some Boomers who think they won't get used as the Bank of Mum and Dad (where I have been suckered into more than once).

But with a few microseconds thought sensible people will realise that releasing massive super into the housing market will do only one thing. Increase housing prices by more than the 50K super you draw down.

A stupid policy which will not work.

Its ********. More supply is needed but nobody is going to rock the housing investment market. Somewhere along the way we came to see houses as a guaranteed way to increase wealth. Personally I think we need a large scale subsidised medium and high density housing scheme. The subsequent drop in house prices would stir up a hornets nest. The press would be running interference hard. Our sprawling cities and stupid commutes are not sustainable either. Homes not houses.

To stop house prices from going up you need two things
1. Interest rates to go up.
2. The right to build a second (or even third and fourth) house on a property where there is already a house.

If it was purely not enough housing then house prices would have dropped because there has been very little immigration in the last few years.

Australia is heading for a housing supply crunch despite the population taking a major dent due to the COVID-19 crisis, with fresh demand set to again outpace supply within a few years.
The latest State of the Nation report from the government’s expert housing advisers highlights the need for reforms to supply side policies and backs Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe’s view that fixing supply bottlenecks is a key element of keeping house prices stable in coming years.

The fight is with so many people invested in the idea of housing prices not being stable or falling.

Housing price rises are inevitable. With overseas students coming back, rents are skyrocketing, and this will soon flow into house prices. Also cost of construction materials (timber in particular) has risen much higher than inflation.

And housing supply is not easily fixed by the Reserve Bank. There is a serious shortage of skilled tradespeople and apprentices which is having a major effect on supply. Skill shortages have been eased by immigration in some industries, but not in construction for some reason.

So, you know, maybe there's a reason why I keep on banging on about it:

Gold Coast Mayor concedes more thought should have gone into prayer room after interest from satanists

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate says he should have thought twice before converting a disused office at council chambers into a prayer room, following attempts by a group of satanists to use it for a blessing.

The prayer room was implemented in March following the appointment of the mayor's long-time spiritual adviser Sue Baynes as council's pastoral adviser.

Ms Baynes has publicly advocated for the controversial Seven Mountains Mandate — a dominionist religious movement that seeks to gain influence over seven spheres of society, including government, education and media — and shift their focus towards evangelical Christian beliefs.

At a religious service in November 2021, Ms Baynes also warned that a "demonic stronghold" had been established at the city's Home of the Arts (HOTA) resulting in a "spiritual battle".

In response, the Noosa Temple of Satan attempted to book council's prayer room in April for a satanic blessing — a request that was denied.

Very much so. It appears that the same thing is happening this time as happened at the last election. In the dying days of the campaign, undecided voters decided to stick with the "devil they know".

The TAB now has Labor $1.47 and the LNP $2.70.

Put me in the "will be very surprised if Morrison isn't still PM Sunday morning" camp.

Labor should be taken out and given a good kicking. Two consecutive elections picking the only bloke in the country with less charisma than Morrison.

Have they been taking lessons from Labour UK?

It isn’t Charisma that is lacking but a framing of themselves as Liberal lite. The idea that Shorten was spruiking ideas too radical for the electorate was ridiculous.

I will be very interested to see what degree the Greens eat into Labour’s primary vote. Australia needs a party with a vision for change. Even if Labor wins I worry that they will just have us treading water in a current going backwards, not leading but following whatever the loudest public opinions are from a hostile media.

You might have missed a bit when you didn't read the article. I guess I'll have to spell it out after all:
