But actually, a meltdown is quite easy to cause, as Fukushima demonstrated. Shutting down the plant isn't enough to prevent it, because the residual decay is still enough to melt the core without active cooling. Most power reactors cannot be safely abandoned for some time after they are shut down. Fukushima was admitedly more than just a melt down, but the point is you still need to keep the plant operating even if you're not running the reactors or else you do risk serious problems. Not Chernobyl level problems, not atomic bomb level problems, but still pretty serious.

Chernobyl was a type of reactor called an RMBK that was a unique design.

Its my understanding that the vast majority of reactors out there are of a design that without any intervention (ie they are abandoned) will not go critical. Remember, Fukishima was not abandoned it was damaged. However, that doesn't mean bomb damage destroying fail safes won't cause a radiation leak.

"But fighting is continuing in the suburbs," he adds.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's Land Forces posted footage purportedly showing its retaking the city airport and a raised Ukrainian flag.

The claims have not been independently verified.

If true, it proves the Russians don't have the heart for this fight.
 
The Metropolitan Police in London says its war crimes team is gathering evidence in relation to alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

That's the last we'll hear of that then.

Three Russian commanders killed – western officials

At least three Russian commanders have been killed after they felt they had to move closer to the front lines, western officials say.

They say the Deputy Commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army was killed by sniper fire. A divisional commander and a regimental commander have also been killed.
Russian commanders have been moving further forward to get more control and more impetus behind operations which have, in some cases, badly stalled.

At Finland’s border crossing with Russia at Vaalimaa, 120 miles (193 kilometres) east of Helsinki, buses and cars stop for passport and customs checks.

These aren’t Ukrainians, they’re Russians - and although the flow isn't heavy, it is constant.

People are anxious to get out of Russia because there has been a persistent rumour that Vladimir Putin’s government might soon introduce martial law to deal with demonstrations against the invasion of Ukraine.

BBC temporarily suspends work of journalists in Russia

BBC director-general says the corporation is temporarily suspending the work of all BBC journalists in Russia, in response to the law.
“This legislation appears to criminalise the process of independent journalism," says director general Tim Davie.

"It leaves us no other option than to temporarily suspend the work of all BBC News journalists and their support staff within the Russian Federation while we assess the full implications of this unwelcome development.

I certainly hope its true and if it is it would suggest the Russian forces are failing badly. Every passing day means the Ukrainians are closer to being able to use all that hardware that is being shipped to them from the west. All those SAMs and AT missiles are not going to do anything for the morale of Russian troops.

As long as they keep broadcasting to Russia that's all that really matters.
