Russian oligarch Fridman warns sanctions will not stop war

One of Russia's richest men has said imposing sanctions on oligarchs would have no impact on Moscow's decision to launch a war in Ukraine.

Billionaire banker Mikhail Fridman told a press conference in London the war was a tragedy for both sides.

But he stopped short of direct criticism, saying personal remarks could be a risk not just to himself but also staff and colleagues.

The billionaire said the sanctions, which freeze some assets and impose a travel ban, were unjustified and he would fight them.

An article on Russia's air force

Speculation on causes near the end of the article:
- Limited stockpile of precision guided munitions (PGM)
- Russian pilots' limited total flying hours
- Fear of friendly fire
- No orders to indiscriminately bomb civilians, compounded by the lack of PGM, which is different than Syria

It also cautions not to rule them out yet, because, like the ground forces, there are just so many and quantity is its own quality.

I think that is literally what the Ukrainian ambassador to the UN argued. Didn't work, but worth a try.

Someone said Putin should get the Donbas. I could not disagree more. He cannot be allowed to get anything. That would just encourage future aggressions.
Frankly, I don't see this crisis ending until Putin withdraws completly or Putin is gone. Get ser for the long haul.
And I think it has dawned upon the West this is an extisntial moment for them. Putin will not stop. His goals arenot just to restore the old Soviet union but to destroy Democracy anywhere. He sees the mere existence of democracy anywhere as a threat.

Ideally you are right but practically if the only way he saves face and stops is to get a few miles of territory or he completely flattens the country, which would be the better option?

I'd like to hear NATO and other likeminded countries tell Putin if he doesn't get out and leave Ukraine mostly intact, those sanctions will not be lifted. I've not heard that, have you?

Given Putin is putting out pure propaganda, he could get out and simply lie about being successful. That would be another option.

Should be noted to Fridman that sanctions aren't designed to stop the war but to punish Russia for the invasion.
