If Mrs von der Leyen wants to do something useful, I would suggest she tries to convince clown-president Zelensky to accept that Crimea and the two breakout republics of Donbass are Russian. This would be a good start, I think.

Or, radical thought, Putin could accept the sovereignity of his neighbours, withdraw and pay damages for his unwarranted aggression.

Yes, this is a (purely theoretical) possibility too. But I believe Mrs. von der Leyen, who is a powerful lady, might have a better chance of success with the clown president than with the former KGB officer .

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian military to put its nuclear forces on "special alert" - the highest level of alert for Russia's Strategic Missile Forces.

Swiss President Cassis says on TV it is "very probably" That Switzerland Will follow the EU on Monday in sanctioning Russia and freezing assets.

This is excellent news! Much of the financial transactions in international energy trade go through Switzerland, as many companies in the energy trade have their seats there (e.g. the owner and operator of the North Stream 2 pipeline, Nord Stream AG, is seated in Zug, Switzerland). Switzerlands earlier stance to stay neutral and keep the dough flowing (as they have done through all wars) might have allowed Russia to divert some of their most crucial business through the Alps.

He's Zero Sum Man, remember? He always needs to invade and conquer. He can't just have a peaceful, mutually-beneficial relationship with neighboring states.

I should have been more explicit: He doesn't need to invade Belarus because when Putin says "Jump", Alexander Lukashenko says "How high?"

I think what Putin can't stand is people bringing into question his cult of power, particularly if those people are leaders of former Soviet territories.
