Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 27

I suspect what Kev MEANT was the the "legitimate result" was that T**** won and that he is just biding his time waiting to assume his rightful seat in the golf cart the White House, and that nobody in the GOP questions that. At least, nobody now that Cheney has been airbrushed out.

Note from Mitch McConnell to Kevin McCarthy:

"Kev. Kevvy. Kevster. Don't draw attention to the Big Lie. No one actually wants their nose pushed into this smelly crap. We want to pretend we have some moral authority to cash all these donation checks, and the rubes need to to think that we respect democracy. Thank you for your support. Trumpty gives his regards."

Well, you know, nobody important, just the guy who lost it, the one that folks like McCarthy are lining up to genuflect to.

McCarthy would like people to believe that Cheney was voted out of her leadership position solely because she'd lost her effectiveness at getting across the basic GOP messaging (lower taxes, smaller government, conservative justices, etc.) because she spoke out against Trump's election lies. The fact is that Cheney was, down the line, 100% in tune with those GOP imperatives, she'd certainly been considered effective enough before the election to land and keep that position, and the only way she's diverged now is in her refusal to go along with Trump in...questioning the legitimacy of the presidential election. It's just breathtaking to me that McCarthy would expect anyone who wasn't already invested in his rewrite of such recent history to be convinced by it.
At least the new GOP has opted to keep the legendary hypocrisy we have all come to know and love.

We live on a plateau in E TN just west of Knoxville. Beautiful mountains in several directions. Just north of Oliver Springs, near Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is a mountain ridge adorned with windmills. From the air, they’re quite majestic. The still photo below loses the dynamic aspect of the blades slowly turning, but you may get the idea.

I agree, it'd be better with motion and in person. Still, that does look like quite the nice scene.

At least the new GOP has opted to keep the legendary hypocrisy we have all come to know and love.

The Lincoln Project had a bit of fun poking at McConnell saying much the same thing as Cheney did in response to the Cheney ouster, either way.

Actually, it seems not. He made the remark that he was with the president, as he was actually with Biden. He's not delusional, just hypocritical and devoid of principle.

I don't know how they did it, but they've managed to become even more hypocritical. And they said it couldn't be done. Just goes to show: never say never.

Cheney who is the classic gawd-awful Republican, like father like daughter, was pushed out by a much more liberal (whatever her name is I haven't learned it yet) newbie who kissed Dump's ass bigly, proving she sees a very clear picture of what is going on.

Good for Cheney saying she'll be working as hard as she can to make sure Dump doesn't become POTUS ever again.

The trouble is that there's a real chance that her replacement (AIUI the front runner is Elise Stefanik) has actually drunk the Kool Aid and although they may have initially supported President Trump because it was tactically expedient, they're now full on-board. :(

There's a parallel here in the UK with Conservative MPs who were anti-Brexit (because they could see how damaging it would be) who have completely reversed their opinion and are blindly extolling the virtues of Brexit despite all the evidence to the contrary - Liz Truss is a good example.

Elise Stefanik may have been critical of President Trump in the past but she, like Graham and Cruz, now supports him 100%.

It's also interesting that senior Republicans think that the problem isn't that they're obstructive jackasses, or that the Trump era was simply full of hot air and no action, but that they simply aren't right wing enough.

Chip Roy, a member of the hardline conservative Freedom Caucus, set forth his opposition to Ms Stefanik in a memo to colleagues on Tuesday.

"Let us contemplate the message Republican leadership is about to send by rushing to coronate a spokesperson whose voting record embodies much of what led to the 2018 ass-kicking we received by Democrats," the Texas congressman wrote.

If the Dems are smart, they can just about ensure a wipeout of the GOP in 2022. While voting restrictions are happening, there are plenty of ways of working around them. It may be axiomatic the ruling party goes down in the midterms, but not a 100% rule that it must happen.

IF the Dems are smart...

How?

Oh, just when you think they have hit a limit, it goes even further.

Last night on Tucker Carlson, apparently, a big time GOPite (maybe Jim Jordan) made the statement something like, "We can all agree that we all have the right to do what we want with our bodies" in an attempt to justify anti-masking.

The irony of this in light of the anti-abortion position of the GOP is apparently completely over their heads.

Apparently there's nothing that can make a GOP guy turn pro-choice, except asking them to wear a mask to slow the spread of a pandemic.

The problem with these idjits is that we can't tell what they really believe because they say one thing one day and another the next depending on where they think their personal interests best lie. Their actual beliefs don't seem to matter.

Their base belief, I think, is that they, as a party, are entitled to govern. In a way, it's not even really about Trump himself anymore, it's just about using his "stolen election!" rhetoric as a groundwork for saying, "well, there are questions about the process, therefore these new restrictions are necessary." They can say with a straight face that "nobody" is denying the legitimacy of Biden's election while they line up to genuflect to the guy who denies it every day because there really isn't, in their minds, any contradiction- Trump's wild claims can be disavowed when they're recast as reasonable doubt, and still made to work for a party that doesn't think they need to win elections based on policy, they only need to not lose them through tactics.

Oh no--they're happy to consider irony by accusing pro-choicers of being hypocrites on this matter.

The GOP has better remember that whe poeple feel the ballot box is of no use to them, thry turn to other means of political change.

I've been saying this for years.

It's why when you yell "hypocrite!" at a Republican they tilt their head like a dog that's just been shown a card trick. To them that's like your toaster getting made at you because you get to decide how dark you want your bread and they don't.

It goes beyond entitlement, goes beyond hypocrisy, it goes beyond all forms of reason and even emotion.

They are the "real Americans" and we are not. There entire world view is not just founded on that, but built entirely of it. That they should be the ones in charge is so obvious they simply don't have an answer as to why, it just is.

IMO most of them are oblivious as to just how dangerous Dump is.

Thank goodness he's old, he doesn't have years to develop his followers into an army.

I'm sure plenty think "oh well then we can just shoot them instead. I like that better. They hate guns anyway don't they? Easy pickings."
