I imagine that right-wing, ant-science, willfully ignorant, conspiracy-minded nut cases are/were drawn to Sarah Palin. I'm trying, with mixed success, not to enjoy the fact that Palin has covid.

So now we have a link to a Russian Orthodox site, which on quick investigation is against the separation of church and state, likes Tucker Carlson, is anti-vax, anti-gay, anti-Catholic, anti-secular, and promotes faith healing. Anti-abortion, anti-birth control, anti-feminist, proudly supports public decrial of blasphemy, likes Putin, believes the Orthodox Church is a bastion against the "New World Order," bases much of its argument on the dictionary definition of a vaccine, while asserting that the definition is meaningless, but it would be a disaster if it changed, appears to misunderstand what an mRNA vaccine does. Seeks to make the Orthodox Church ....excuse me, the Russian Orthodox Church because those Turkish ones are heretics....the standard bearer of a new modern world where everyone is like the lucky Russians. Did I miss much? Oh yes, they also support the mass excommunication of all supporters of "Black Lives Matter," and the disenfranchisement of "sexual deviants." They also support teenage marriage, and declare that "Social Justice is Sociopathic." Oh yes, they're against pets too, at least if you don't balance them off with children. Gotta have children! Lots of children. Oh, wait, there's more! They're pro Monarchy too. And, of course, needless to say, pro-gun. About the only thing that's no utterly crazy is that they seem not to hate the Jews. At least not all of them.

Their site is a rich slumgullion of sectarian insanity.

Caroline, I did not realize you're Russian Orthodox, or at least in their camp. It's no surprise you are not fond of many here, some of whom have no religion at all, but I did not know you supported the crusade against Catholics and Muslims too.

What exactly is the problem calling the vaccines "Gene Therapy?"

Looks like a completely legitimate approach and works well. Of course a lot of the stuff in the earlier link is pure nonsense and outright lies but I have no problem with the designation "Gene Therapy."

EtoA: Apparently, "Gene Therapy" can also be used to describe changes to one's genetic code. This, of course, is not what mRNA vaccines do but the nuts seem to want to wave the term "Gene Therapy" as always something that changes human genes. That isn't true.

Up until a week or so ago, Caroline thought DNA was some kind of preservative. There's not a chance in the world that her understanding of the science involved here has advanced far enough that any explanations of why the claims in the link are wrong will ever get through to her. At this point, the only reasonable response to posts by Caroline would be along the lines of a metaphorical pat on the head and "that's nice, dear. Tend your knitting."

Of course not. But they do introduce genetic material into your cells that cause the cells to generate parts of the spike protein. That has been considered a form of gene therapy. It is and was widely used in regard to mRNA technology.

I'm not willing to let anti-vaxxers re-write the meaning of "Gene Therapy" to require altering one's DNA. It has a broader meaning.

It appears the anti-vaxxers have partially succeeded in associating "Gene Therapy" with only applying to gene alteration. A time range search for the term shows extremely common, almost universal, usage in the first part of 2020 in referring to the development of mRNA Covid-19 vaccines. Have we let the anti-vaxxers change our language?

Note that your source isn't solely about gene therapy. ETA: and it would appear to me they are just pointing out that the development of covid vaccines will aid gene therapy due to similar technologies involved.

This doesn't appear to be completely accurate use of the terminology. mRNA encodes the same information as a gene but isn't itself considered genetic material because it's not part of the inherited material.

Note that I'm not entirely sure about this and would also point out your terminology appears close enough and wouldn't normally lead to any misunderstanding.

The mRNA certainly isn't part of human genetic material. It hijacks the cell to create proteins the immune response can recognize and respond to. I believe it's quite a clever approach that is less likely to have adverse effects than traditional vaccines. Which is why I got jabbed as soon as I was eligible.

As for the terminology, I think the meaning is reasonably clear and just don't like the way the anti-vaxxers have grabbed and to a degree taken over "Gene Therapy" to suggest that it's the same thing as gene editing. While it can be that, Covid-19 mRNA vaccines certainly aren't.

But words and phrases evolve from usage. So when "Gene Therapy" comes to only mean inheritable "Gene Editing" I will cease to find it applicable to mRNA based vaccines. Perhaps that time has come but it leaves a large wake of past info that anti-vaxxers can link to that discusses mRNA vaccines in terms of "Gene Therapy" and it just, unfortunately, gives them ammunition. Especially if it's now defined as inheritable gene editing.

I dipped briefly onto that site, ans it's basically the same mushbrained stuff that was on previous sites. The vaccines are poisons, and they'll kill us, and when they do, we'll blame the unvaccinated.
