I wonder if this is who banned all the gender critical subs on Reddit? Crying wolf like this is a good way of covering your tracks

Challenor was only recently hired as a Reddit Admin, and my understanding (which is shaky) is that mods can't ban subs. They have, however, been a mod for Reddit for a long time, especially in a lot of trans and youth related subs. So I suspect they've had a fair bit of influence on decisions made to silence feminist and female-focused subs.

I suspect Challenor would have had to be good friends with people on the inside to have got the job in the first place, never mind without a 5 second background check

Reddit has a lot of problems. Honestly, we've got congress pressuring Facebook, Google, and Amazon to be more censorious of their content... but somehow Reddit hasn't been included in that mix.

They've had entire subs dedicated to pedophilia. Subs dedicated to rape keep popping up. They've got subs dedicated to all sorts of sordid, violent, and highly sexual content.

No argument from me there. Reddit is a hellscape. I think a lot of the mod anger about the Challenor has to do with the clear double standard. Mods have to deal with the general nastiness and inconsistent enforcement of community standards, meanwhile Reddit has a very different (and good) set of standards to protect their actual employee admins from harassment brigades. They saw that Reddit was taking site-wide action to protect an extremely poor hiring choice, meanwhile doing little to protect their mods who are in the trenches dealing with vile redditors every day with very little assistance from Reddit.

But hey - they'll ban subs dedicated to feminist topics quick as a blink for violating their standards on tolerance...

Let's not mince words. They only banned the TERFs as far as I know. "Gender critical" was one of many dens of bigotry banned by the site during the last purge that included, most prominently, "the donald".

Were there any other feminist subs banned besides Gender Critical, and the resulting copycat subs that sprung up after to evade the original ban? Given that there are other, larger feminist subreddits still active, it's pretty safe to say they were banned for the overt transphobia, not any feminist content.

Did you actually see any of this bigotry yourself or did you just read about it on subs apparently run by a pedophile using transphobia to hide their tracks?

It's a fine line between protest and cancellation. One one end of the spectrum, you've got people being harassed, doxxed, and coercively fired for what amounts to a social faux pas - like having made a borderline racist remark over 10 years ago as a child, or having expressed a sexist sentiment more than 20 years ago (the guy at Boeing). On the other end, you've got a person with a history of enabling pedophiles to access children, in a position that would allow them to extend that access to the pedophiles with which they personally associate, which seems like an actual real danger to children and youth.

To me, one end of that spectrum seems like absurd overreactions... and the other end seems like appropriate action. There's undoubtedly a lot of gray area in between where it's uncertain and people have differing views.

What has baffled me a bit with this thread is that there are a whole lot of people who don't seem to see a gray area at all, and who seem to feel that all cases of such actions are perfectly fine and acceptable. That worries me, from the perspective of a well-functioning society.

Those are absurd over reaction to you, as most of them are to me. They are not to some people. The reddit pedophile is an obvious example of "cancel culture" done right and kudos to Reddit for firing this person... to me, and to you. But not some other people.

Neither you nor I are the arbiters of the line in which its OK to call for someone to be fired using social media, or boycott a company etc. It may be baffling that some people are "butthurt" over things you or I scratch our heads over but they still get to exercise their freedom of speech.

I guess teacher Kimberly Newman cancelled herself!

(and just as well)

I agree, as valid as it is to say you shouldn’t be so upset about something, it’s equally valid to say you should be more upset than you are.

Oh, and people are burning more Nike stuff because a gay rapper made Satan themed shoes.

Yeah... they banned the PCOS sub, after having replaced the moderators with trans people/allies, and after the females suffering from an exclusively female condition with painful effects were swarmed by a bunch of transwomen complaining that it wasn't inclusive enough of their non-ovary-having perspectives...

I don't understand your complaint. Trans people can suffer from PCOS.

Let's see what the pinned post on the still operating PCOS sub says:

After Reddit's ban of /r/GenderCritical and other hate subs, we have had a large influx of bad-faith users who wish to denigrate other people for their gender, rather than help them as fellow people living with PCOS. As a moderation team, we have sought help from the site admins, we have brought on new members and mods, and we have spent of time cleaning out the mod queue and banning bad actors. We were forced to temporarily make the sub private to prevent the onslaught of bigotry. The tide has now been stemmed, and /r/PCOS is now open for business - and is welcoming to *all people with PCOS*. Women with PCOS are welcome here. Men with PCOS are welcome here. Non-binary people with PCOS are welcome here. If that is not agreeable to you, you are welcome to seek another website that will tolerate your intolerance. You will, however, be met with a swift and permanent ban from this one.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PCOS/comments/hmlhjc/rpcos_is_an_inclusive_community/

I have no idea how you would prove this is true, but it strikes me as very plausible. There's a pretty common pattern that unfolds whenever one of these dens of bigotry gets banned from the site. usually the mods/members attempt to make copycat subreddits, which are usually swiftly also banned by the admins. When these copycats fail, they attempt to flock over to some smaller, niche subreddit and take it over.

Sounds like when "GenderCritical" got the boot, all the TERFs came flooding out looking for a new home and caused a few kerfuffles, which were dealt with.

It sounds very plausible that the paedophile admins at Reddit cried transphobic wolf to hide their tracks like they've cried in the past. Hundreds of thousands of children and adults have been exposed to their propaganda. Apparently Challenors alt account has spent over $400 on Reddit awards since this all blew upp

But Emily's Cat specifically referred to "trans women". I think it's obvious that trans men could suffer from PCOS, but trans women?

To put in bluntly, I simply don't believe this is what happened.

It's a poor example to discuss because reddit is not very forthcoming with their moderation decisions. There's very little record here to examine, nor anything to point to that definitely indicates why any admin action was taken against this rather small, niche sub. Trying to reach back in time to figure out what happened just leads to dead links, deleted comments, and the like. Reddit does not offer much transparency into these kinds of decisions, so we're left with vague impressions of what happened with little evidence to prove it.

I can't find much mention of it besides breathless TERF articles claiming it was some anti-woman coup. The mod post pinned on the sub indicates that admin action was necessary after a bunch of bigoted refugees from the banned TERF sub "GenderCritical" started hijacked the sub, a story I find very credible but likewise can't really prove because there's scant information.

Perhaps it's more fruitful to take a broader view about reddit policy and whether their content policy constitutes "cancel culture" at all.

But if that's the case, why didn't you say that? Why, instead, did you say that you didn't understand Emily's Cat's complaint - when in actual fact you did understand it, you just think it was wrong?

Sloppiness on my part. Your comment helped clarify, thanks.

Oh, and people are burning more Nike stuff because a gay rapper made Satan themed shoes.

The funniest thing for me has been watching people go "wait, he's gay?", and other people replaying with "well, he's got songs about how much he likes sucking dick, so...yeah?"
